1. What do you think about war in general or the war in Iraq? Should Bush let drafting begin? Explain.I believe the war in Iraq was poorly planned, poorly executed, poorly funded, and poorly promoted. Everything about it screams failure, denial, and confusion. It's a known fact that the Bush Administration cherry-picked shady evidence to put together a flimsy case for invading this sovereign nation-nothing has happened to hold them accountable for such deceit. It's also a fact that our soldiers on the ground do not have the supplies and armor they need to survive in Iraq, let alone defeat a growing insurgency. As of recently, it is also a fact that Iraqis on the whole want us to leave their country...no one seems to be listening to what THEY want, and they have shown through both voting and rising violence that a civil war must occur and possibly split the nation in order to have any hope of peace. For Bush to see these events and say "stay the course" is ridiculous; he has crossed the imaginary line between 'liberation' and 'occupation' of Iraq, and it would be in America's best interest to leave with what little respect we still have. The draft is out of the question in this situation-we need to stop kidding ourselves and just bring the troops home.
2. How do you feel about abortion? Legalize it? In my opinion, Roe v. Wade should be upheld.
a. govt should not be involved. The government should get involved if private parties try to restrict a woman's choice.
b. parents should get notify if under 18. This is difficult because the maturity for this decision cannot be magically gained at any universal age. I'll have to consider this more, but for now I'll say no.
c. no its murder. I chuckle at how the same people who say this are first in line to sentence someone to the death penalty.
d. its the women personal matter, who cares. Because this is an issue that offends so many people emotionally, spiritually, and morally..I believe we should conduct the debate with a proper amount of respect for all sides, because everyone has the right to care =)
3. Gun control should be more strict. Guns kill people or people kill people? What are your thoughts?Hunting rifles? OK. Military/Law enforcement-issued? Alright. Handguns? Please. Seriously, I know that people kill people, but we would have much fewer of those "Oh whoops son/daughter/wife/mailman..I thought you were a burglar!" cases. Having a gun in the home does not make you or your family safer, no matter how powerful it may make you feel. So...yes gun control should be more strict, because we are all human beings who make mistakes, and because the 2nd Amendment doesn't apply to the current population anyway (maybe those guys in Iraq could use it, but not us ^^).
4. There should not be welfare because those who can obtain it will abuse it. If welfare was to be taken away people will work? Welfare is for those who are in need and those who's income does not fit for their family. There are definitely not enough jobs for everyone at working age to have one. Because turnover in this country fluctuates and people are laid off left and right..sometimes, things HAPPEN to people and it just isn't their fault. In the case of welfare, yes the system should be reformed so that not as many can abuse it, but it should not be abolished. So many people tend to have an elementary school teacher approach to the problem of welfare fraud: if there are 2 bad kids, put the whole 30-student class on timeout for 10 minutes, so the majority can sulk and sarcastically yell THANKS A LOT to those bad kids--Except we're not in school anymore..time out for our country's poor could actually mean putting a huge stop to any hope of social mobility, and may even lead to hunger and homelessness--once again, for something that was not their fault. The truth is that some people just need help, and since our country can afford it we should give it to them without whining and being selfish..after all, we are all in the same (sinking? lol) boat together.
5. Same sex marriage is illegal. It is believed that marriage is ONLY between a man and a women. It is against the morals of God. OR People should not care about this because its love between two persons. It isn't nesscessay that same sex could not love.I think that the issue of gay marriage has been repeatedly brought into the spotlight to rally the conservative Republican base together, and divert our attention from things like the war and the economy. It is purely a debate about the role of church in state--and there should be none. Two men or two women having the same rights as the rest of us is not hindering anyone's pursuit of happiness.
6. Higher taxes on the bigger businesses is better. And as for the lower division, taxes should only be base on their income.I agree, big business should be taxed at a higher level than the working poor. It seems that the poorest of our citizens have gotten no tax breaks at all, while the biggest corporations who are already drowning in money just keep getting richer. The sad part is, the middle class is beginning to disappear. The CEO's can definitely handle a little tax increase..the rest of us are barely staying afloat in this economy so it only makes sense.
7. Marijuana should be legalize for the use of only for medical terms. There should be a strict rule against it. What are teh benefits if it is legalize? OR should it not be legalize?? Explain.Haha we had a nice debate about this at Junior Statesmen of America..anyways, it should be legalized, so many people do it anyway. It has been proven to help in certain medical cases, but also for recreational use marijuana should become legal because the battle to combat its usage is totally futile. Honestly, if you are a good enough parent, you can teach your child not to take in substances that might harm them..and they will understand without the fear of arrest driving them to "sneak around" instead.
8. Immigration should be strict. It is unfair for those who wants to come but can not. Should the government be more strict on illegal immigration? Explain. It is ridiculous to consider deporting all of the illegal immigrants in our country today, so I say they all should just be given identification and legalized. The 'guest worker' program is also wishful thinking because they will just find a way to stay here indefinitely anyway! Whenever you are dealing with a group of people that feel they have nothing to lose, you can never truly win. They didn't come here to steal our cars or murder our citizens--they came here to make a better life for themselves, and will continue to do so until our 'land of opportunity' reputation is completely lost.
9. People who tremendous mass murder background should get the death penalty. Even one the person has committed one murder they should still be sent to the death penalty. Or is it against the moral of america? An eye for an eye. Explain. This is a complex topic for me..one that I disagree with my father on (huge surprise!). He thinks that for the most part, people shouldn't be sentenced..but that there are SOME killers that "just need to die." I on the other hand feel that the death penalty is primitive and far below the moral standards of this country. It really does cost more to go through all the legal processes to put a man to death than it does to keep him fed in prison for the rest of his life. Also, there are far too many people on death row that are proven innocent after their executions..there are still a great deal of kinks to work out in the system before we can consider such measures.
10. Affirmative Actions. What are your thoughts on this topic? The level playing field in this country is purely an illusion. There are SO many factors that separate American students from one another, and it comes as no surprise that there is a sharp line dividing blacks and latinos, and whites and asians. It is ignorant to think that by letting the chips fall where they may..that we are doing some sort of racial justice for everyone. We've already been over this so many times..it starts with the two-school phenomenon, gets magnified by socio-economic differences, and blown up by the deficiencies of our public schools. Whenever someone (usually rich..) asks "Why can't those lower class minority kids just work hard to be on our level?" I just want to scream. These wealthy kids probably have supportive college-educated parents, private school education, a quiet house to study in, a parent ready to drive them anywhere, great technology, and don't get me started on $5,000 SAT prep. Imagine someone without any of those advantages, a dangerous neighborhood, a bad school that doesn't offer a lot of AP classes, and a culture that says picking up a book makes you a loser. Then you'll realize just how much so many American kids have to overcome just to "be on your level," when all of it was just given to you. Until we find practical ways to combat all of these social problems, affirmative action is the only way to establish some decency.
