i'm thinking of majoring and hopefully get a master's in accounting. i'm gonna take an introductory class next semester. wat should i expect? is it REALLY hard? also, i found out that instead of wasting my money and majoring in account, i could just grad w/ my BS and still be eligible to master in accounting.

please give me some tips/advice about accounting!

thanks! smile.gif

The early Accounting classes in my opinion are a joke, but you should still make an effort to master the material covered in these classes because like math, the material builds on previous courses

And yes your still eligible to take a Masters in Accounting even if your major isn't accounting.

I think most graduate programs do require some accounting prereqs if you do not have an undergrad accounting degree.

i agree with Osix

pay attention in those intro to accounting classes becuase the materials build

in intro, they're gonna expose you to the different accounts and the debits and credits.......make sure you know and understand them cuz you're gonna have a major heachache if you go higher up and don't know what the accounts are

on an unrelated side note, i thought accounting would be boring but the funniest teachers i've had had all been accounting professors
in fact, all of them have been extremely funny

don't know if you will have the good experience i've had though smile.gif

yeah, the early accounting classes are a joke, but I haven't gotten into the higher level ones yet. they're so stupid that I don't really want to take them, but I gotta...

ah... but not before I take complex variables and numerical analysis!

i think the masters for non-accounting majors is a little different from the regular one. in any case, if you are planning to take the CPA definitely declare your major as accounting. also, you will need it to be able to get an internship before you graduate.

i wouldn't worry about difficulty, just make sure its something you want to do and you won't have a problem working through it. personally, i think accounting is one of the most dynamic and interesting professions in business

if you can get 150 hours without the masters i don't recommend doing the 5th year of school. its a lot of money for tuition and big four firms will not pay you more money. start working as early as you can, but thats just my opinion

edit: its 150 hours for illinois, its less in california. look up the cpa requirements for your state

what do you mean by getting 150 hours?

Hi Melissa!
Yeah I'm thinking about it (majoring in business but not sure which kind yet), but I haven't even taken a class yet. I'm going to take some next semester. I'd rather take anything but nursing (or any other sciences) at this point. I've decided science isn't for me.

each state has its own requirements for taking the cpa exam
(cpa = certified public accountant). in illinois, you need at least 150 credit hours before you can sit for the exam.

the certification is not required, but not getting one somewhat limits your career opportunities. however, if you want to work at any public accounting firm, you will need to be a cpa

^ ooh i see. thanks for the info. smile.gif

I have another questiion... Right now I'm going to college in Nevada (and I currently have residency here too). I'm not sure when I'll move back to California, but I plan to graduate in NV. So if I take the cpa test in NV, I'll still be considered a cpa when I move back to CA? or could I have to take the test for CA too? Sorry if I sound confusing.

its a good question
no, you will not have to retake the exam

if you do switch to accounting i suggest you sit down with your counselor and plan out the rest of your college career. there are a lot of specific requirements and you don't want to realize something the year before you graduate and find out you have to stay another semester or something.
