China, Later Tang Dynasty, 10th Century.
On the eve of the Chong Yang Festival, golden flowers fill the Imperial Palace. The Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) returns unexpectedly with his second son, Prince Jai (Jay Chou). His pretext is to celebrate the holiday with his family, but given the chilled relations between the Emperor and the ailing Empress (Gong Li), this seems disingenuous. For many years, the Empress and Crown Prince Wan (Liu Ye), her stepson, have had an illicit liaison. Feeling trapped, Prince Wan dreams of escaping the palace with his secret love Chan (Li Man), the Imperial Doctor's daughter. Meanwhile, Prince Jai, the faithful son, grows worried over the Empress's health and her obsession with golden chrysanthemums. Could she be headed down an ominous path? The Emperor harbors equally clandestine plans; the Imperial Doctor (Ni Dahong) is the only one privy to his machinations. When the Emperor senses a looming threat, he relocates the doctor's family from the Palace to a remote area. While they are en route, mysterious assassins attack them. Chan and her mother, Jiang Shi (Chen Jin) are forced back to the palace. Their return sets off a tumultuous sequence of dark surprises. Amid the glamour and grandeur of the festival, ugly secrets are revealed. As the Imperial Family continues its elaborate charade in a palatial setting, thousands of golden armored warriors charge the palace. Who is behind this brutal rebellion? Where do Prince Jai's loyalties lie? Between love and desire, is there a final winner? Against a moonlit night, thousands of chrysanthemum blossoms are trampled as blood spills across the Imperial Palace.
I can't wait for the movie to be shown in the cinemas in my country.

Nope, it does not live up to the hype, unfortunately.
DEFINITELY a LOT of boobage. hahah every single woman (except for Chan's mother) has major unattractive boobage
So.... the movie was kind of lame. The story was boring to me, and I got pretty restless waiting for it to end x_X (it was two hours long). Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li were very good though. Jay Chou was okay too, though his character wasn't extremely challenging to portray. The guy who played the eldest son was horrible, I thought. His expressions and his acting in general were laughable. The battle/fight scene was pretty amazing though it was unnecessarily violent. Loved the relationship between Gong Li and Jay Chou, but that was about all I really liked. Oh, I also loved the costumes and the decorations of the palace. Extreeeemely beautiful

Who said the Promise was good? I believe it was universally ridiculed. There's even a famous spoof of it in China.

I believed you until you said the eldest son acted bad. He's Liu Ye. He's probably the most gifted young actor I can think of, East or West. He's never failed in a movie, and all the reviews coming out single him out as one of the highlight performances of this movie.
Also, the story is a very famous Chinese play...so if it's boring, well...it's a classic. Classics are boring.
I haven't seen it, but IMDB gives it a 7.1 rating so I'm pretty hopeful.

Honestly, even if you're a hardcore Jay Chou fan...it's a waste of money. The majority of the girls' boobs were literally hanging out (not really, but yeah), the storyline doesn't make much sense, and almost everyone in the movie
Melissa.

Overall, really good movie, Zhang Yimou definitely knows how to keep going. Storyline's great, little confusing at times, but the twist at the end makes it all the better. Gong Li & Chow Yun Fat are amazing with their acting abilities, no need to say more. Jay Chou's definitely improved from his previous roles in movies, but again, lacks in his emotions & acting stage. His movements seem lagged for his dramatic part in the movie, but the ending comes together nicely.
I give 8/10
