Is there a big difference between the D40 and the D50 in terms of specifications...etc?
Given the choice between buying the D40 and the D50, what would you recommend?

No.. I think more of the difference between the D40 and D50 is in size. The D40 I think is closer in size to the Rebel. So it's really your preference.

It's a given that the D40 is a downgraded version of D50. I heard it's as close to a point and shoot as a DSLR can get if that makes any sense. I have the D50 and I love it >___< I think the screen on D40 is bigger than the D50 though but I'm not sure O_O

In addition to the smaller size, the Nikon D40 will not feature a mechanical focus drive pin not allowing the use of AF in lens without a built-in focus motor. It has a 3 area AF sensor instead of 5. There is no bracketing. The viewfinder magnfication is higher. The LCD is larger and has higher resolution. The battery is 400 mAh less. I think those are a few of the other important differences. So there are some upgrades and some downgrades.
