Firefox Memory Leak have you noticed it?

Firefox - my favourite browser of all time - takes up a LOT of memory if you leave it running for a couple of hours straight. Have you noticed this?

I'm used to keeping my computer open a lot - and since I use my Gmail notifier extension, I tend to keep Firefox open for a couple of hours at a time. When I first start Firefox, it takes about 45MB of system memory... but after 6-8 hours of browsing youtube and reading news and downloading stuff, I check my TaskManager and it's using 150MB ! I've actually seen it go upto 450MB once when I had the window open for a full day without closing it !!

I asked one of my whiz buddies about this discrepancy (and he's like a deity when it comes to computers - makes me feel like a noob)... and he says that Firefox has some known memory leaks and the developers are working to fix it.

Have you noticed it as well? And do you have any info as to what causes it, and when they might be able to fix it?

Quick Solution: To fix this, all you have to do it close Firefox and restart it. All of a sudden it's back to using it's regular 45 megs.

=====================

EDIT (Dec 23rd):
Firefox 2.0 has solved this problem greatly. I've had my gmail and google page open for 48+ hours straight, and seen it cap at 150 MB - which I find is good enough for me. I'm sure they will trim it further in their next official release.

I never knew. I guess it's because I usually close my browser after I'm finished browsing the internet, then open it again right away because I forgot to do something.

The longest I left it open was probably for 3 hours or so.

Noticed this long time ago. That's why, instead of jumping on the Firefox bandwagon, it's not my favourite browser.

oh good, I thought my computer was starting to run slow or something. I notice it when I'm photoshopping and I leave the browser open in order to search for pics and stuff. I hope they fix it soon.

it's not so bad browsing most webpages...but pages with lots of flash tend to cause all sorts of memory leak issues...at least for me...

It only gets up to around 50-60k for me... Are you talking about Firefox 2?

no wondering it gets slower.

i juz restart it instinctively when it gets slow but didn't notice it's caused by memory leak. lol.

I guess I've lucked out, never had any leaks at all w/FF. Can easily go days w/out restarting FF and works like a charm.

okay.. they improved on it with Firefox 2, but I still see it going to 150megs after about 2 hours of keeping it open...
=> at least with FF2, i've not seen it taking up more than 150megs...

you're right in saying that if you open flash pages (like youtube), it starts taking up more memory...

This is pretty strange, I only have 1 gig of memory but I don't lag at all. I don't use tabs and have as much as 20 windows up at a time in firefox, but never slowed down.

^ memory leak doesn't mean your comp will lag definitely.

tongue.gif i have 3 gigs of DDR2 memory.. so it never lags, no matter how much memory it's taking. but it bothers me that the bug hasn't been fixed yet.

anyways, even if firefox used 500 megs of memory, i'd still use it... cause it's my favourite browser. just can't beat the add-ons and extensions. dunno how i ever lived without them. biggrin.gif

anyways, as i said before.. i've never seen it go higher than 150 megs in FF2... so i'm content with that. i know they'll cut it down further sooner or later.

firefox is my second gf wub.gif
