I'm thinking about buying a drawing tablet for my brother for his birthday because he'll be majoring in some form of art in college after hs. I figured a tablet may be useful for practicing (not to mention, it's quite fun to use, hehe).
So I was searching and found that Wacom seems to be a leading brand, my only reserve was that they were a bit pricey wink.gif .
I know there are a lot of artists around here and was wondering if they're actually worth the money, and if there are any better brands you could recommend. And price is a factor too, I don't think I want to spend $500 on a tablet, even if he is my brother.

Any help would be much appreciated smile.gif

Ya, I've only ever used a wacom intuos2, they're pretty good.
I am the minority here.

There are cheaper Wacom tablets. My new Graphire4 was only around $80. And then there are $200 ones, etc.

get a wacom intuos 3... well thts what i have LOL thts all i know other than the centique but those are like 3000$ : [

i have the 11x17 but it was a bad decision on my part... i never really draw the full length of the tablet and therefore my line on screen doesnt either : [

i would suggest a size smaller...

my friend juss bought wacom tablet also but he bought the smallest size i think its 5x4 i think. tiny but he says thts all he needs.

it depends on what your tryin to draw i guess.

do you know what shcool your bro is goin to? or major? and dont say art... there are many many categories in art.

I know saying that he's going into art is very general but even he doesn't have a clear cut answer about that wink.gif he switches all the time (he's still a junior in hs so I guess he has some time to finalize his answer)
hmmm, so wacom seems to be a popular choice...

but what's the difference between a graphire and intuos? are they essentially the same?

I bought a wacom for my little sister.

It takes a while to get used to, but now she says it's like drawing on paper. I think it's worth the money.

If you buy online, it's cheaper too. Just an alternative.

A wacom tablet is a better choice.
I have one, but it's the graphire, the smallest one.. for under 100?
nonetheless, it's still works well.. and I like working with it..
you can check out my examples from using the tablet in my signature, where it says "my art". Even though it's small, it can achieve the same results.. depending how well you work with it.
I'll be getting a new one soon, the cintiq one, 21".. around $2000 XD w00t.gif

^ Yeah, I didn't think Wacom tablets were that pricey...only the really big ones. I got my Wacom tablet in the white, small version and it only costed like $50 at Comp USA.

Good luck finding one! Wacom is your way to go though. biggrin.gif

Get a Wacom Graphire first, and if he really is serious about digital art, he'll save up for an Intuos later. It's an essential stage...XD

The difference between a Graphire and an Intuos is the range of pressure levels.
The Graphire has 512 levels while the Intuos has 1024.
But even for some professional artists, they don't find significant differences in performance at all.

I have a A6 (4x5) Graphire4 and my school uses Intuos3... I have to say this though, the Intuos stylus pen lets you have a better grip in a way, cos it's longer and gives you a sense of weight.

Happy shopping! ^^

His birthday was today and I ended up getting him the Intuos 3.
It was a bit pricey but he seemed pretty happy...I tried it out and was pleased with the performance. Of course, I don't really have anything to compare it with, although I did have a Wacom tablet once but it was a while ago and I don't even know what kind it was...

anyone planning on getting Wacom tablet, I recommend it! I'm not an artist myself (I gave up that goal a while ago, hehe) but it seems to be worth it.

Although it also seems like I should have just saved myself some money and gotten the Graphite instead wink.gif ...
