A friend of mine is looking for an external HD for his laptop. He is looking for about 100gb. Any good brands that he should look at otherwise he will end up just getting the cheapest thing he can find. sweatingbullets.gif

Also looking for an external DVD burner. Suggestions for that as well please. biggrin.gif

he could just buy an external enclosure and find the right sized hard drive to drop into it.
I am the minority here.

I have a Western Digital "My Book" 250 GB. It does what it's made to do.

I would say get something like WD, Seagate, and reputable companies, but the two I mentioned are the popular ones, I think. If your friend buys the cheapest one and it's a no name company, good luck!

that's like desktop size but for a laptop use you probably want a portable thing so it's gonna be more expensive but here's a more portable one.. but not 100gb

I sorta wonder though... how BAD can the cheapest one you can buy be?

Seriously...
Whats the worse hard drive they can put in it? Hi-Storage 100gb or some generic name? (I made that name up)
Most have normal drives in it like a maxtor, segate, or western digital... maybe a travelstar or hitachi if you're getting a small 2.5" style one.

The USB to IDE controller on one versus another seems like a trivial difference to me. There was a soompier who had their controller go out. Who knew silicon would die under normal operating conditions... anyways cheap doesn't always mean bad.

Oh yeah, Seagate owns Maxtor now. (as in company not pwon omg n00b!!)

Personally, I would opt for something like this since its a laptop.

(note the 2.5" which means its a laptop drive within the case so its physically more shock resistant and smaller, also note the lack of a AC adapter... this thing can run off your USB port)

the cheaper way and more rewarding way i think is to buy a enclosure and an internal hard drive.

I recommend Seagate. I got the 200 gb for 2 years now and it's still like NEW condition. The way I use it is that, I leave it on for HOURS too.

Oh yea, get an external with a fan so the harddrive doesn't burn out.

I got a cheap 160GB Acomdata, which is okay but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It gets hot pretty quickly because it doesn't have a fan (It said it didn't need a fan on the box it came in, though...). An error in Windows Explorer occurs a lot when I'm transferring files, but that may be my computer.

My brother just got me 400GB Western Digital for $100 with a rebate on Black Friday. Talk about a deal! From what I've heard, it's a good brand. I haven't tested it yet since I want to fill up my Acomdata first.

Do you guys keep your externals HD's on all the time? Should I? I keep mine plugged in all the time, but I only turn it on to transfer files.

I have two western digital external hard drives. One's 120GB and one's 160GB and they've been good to me so far, even when I was kinda abusing them when I newb to external harddrives. I think they generally also have rebate deals going on all the time, although for one of my rebates on the 160 it was a mail in and they never received it so I didn't get my money. I called them and everything >>; Oh yea and I've had these babies for about two years and so far no problems.
