G-Dragon: Publicity Stunt?

This article is member-submitted and does not represent Soompi in any way.

Attention: I am not a professional reporter on Kpop news. I'm just going to keep editing this post, and I'm unlikely to blog about any other type of news. This is just my opinion that has gotten attention from Soompi as a featured article. If you're going to try and rub it in my face with G-Dragon this, G-Dragon that, find a real fan that will react the way you want them to. I just enjoy music as it is. The only thing that bothers me is how people allow one incident to taint something originally pure, and won't let it go. There's a reason I call this a publicity stunt...

I'll just finish this 'article' with a quote I find most appropriate, which can be found at the bottom.

By now everyone's heard of G-Dragon's new song Heartbreaker and the similarities between Flo Rida's Right Round. My guess is that the 30 sec teaser we were treated with is specially cut to garner such attention, and free advertising to not just Korean audience but American attention as well. As of now, there are three days left until GD releases his official single, Heartbreaker, and everyone is waiting; everyone is watching because if it is plagiarism, he's screwed. However, if it's not plagiarism and it turns out that 30 sec cut is just the only part that sounds like that, then what we have on our hands is probably one of the best advertising schemes of 2009 or maybe even in all Kpop.

Reasons I believe Heartbreaker isn't plagiarized.

First tip is that G-Dragon isn't an idiot - he is well aware of the music world. He must know that others will recognize the beat, if he does copy an entire song. Plagiarism of music is often found through songs that are lesser known (such as Viva La Vida vs. Creaky Boards).

Second tip off is Teddy and YG's involvement. Since Teddy is a respected recording artist, and a friend of GD, I highly doubt he would've morally allowed GD to blatantly plagiarize such a popular song. Taeyang, Daesung, TOP and Seungri would all loose respect for their leader.

Third reason: GD has officially acquitted on each account of accused plagiarism. With Lies, Crazy Dog and Fool, the original artist have come out to say that it is either not copied, credited sampling, or coincidence. After all, you can only have so many progressions in a song before things begin to sound repetitive.

Fourth* reason: After letting the news of Heartbreaker come out, GD releases a FULL SONG called Gossip Man which is about his issues with plagiarism and being scrutinized under public eye. So obviously, GD has something planned out.

If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong and I will be sorely disappointed in GD, and he probably just missed one of the greatest advertising schemes in history. Once Heartbreaker comes out, everyone will rush to watch and bump that song into the number one spot. It won't be just GDragon fans, it will be his haters, curious people and music companies. It's the ultimate exposure. After all, there's no better way to spread the news than controversy. It's the way many artists (painting wise) get popular.

We'll see.
We have three days.

edit
“With this reason, we cannot say that the song plagiarised that of ‘Heartbreaker’. There is so many cases of artistes getting inspiration from one another lately, If we are going to rule the song plagiarism just because it has some parts which feels the same, then many artistes and producers will fall into serious censorship.” - Warner Korea

Haters will find the similarities more obvious, lovers will be blind to the similarities. In the end, the most intentional part of G-Dragon's CD, his purpose to create enjoyable music for people who want to listen, will probably be ruined in such a manner that any original purity or hard-worked intent in his songs can't be found anymore.

And you know what?

Both sides are probably going to be at fault for making an enjoyable CD a discomforting memory.

    ouch......

    this plagiarism is still on....

    yah... I'm a big fan of G-Dragon,,,,

and I'm also a music lover and a critic person.....

we cannot say it was plagariazed...
because as a lyricist or a artist in a music industry,,,,,,
should be careful on what music are they are making, and besides Teddy co-write heartbreaker......

flo rida also commented it was just maybe a coincedence....

and the article writter was right there was a little bit similar in one part but it was cut.

maybe they put that cause it will blend to the beat its music....

    for me it wasn't plagarized.....

I'm not sayin' this because I'm a fan... but because It was by my own observation....

thank you and peace to all commentators....

I wasn't a big fan of Big Bang until G-Dragon released his solo album. I feel disheartened after all the allegations. Yes, I can hear the similarities in the beat of some of his songs, but the lyrics are completely different. I like the reasons that you pointed out. GD, YG and whoever is involved with producing the album can't be THAT stupid, right? Not like I listen to Flo-rida either, but really this is like the US remaking Asian movies without acknowledging its source. For some reason, it is really hard for Asians (non-Americans) to make it big in the US. Geehh ...

Now all I want is to know what the results are!!

There's nothing to "amen" about. GD is GD, whatever he does it won't affect us in any ways of shape or form. God I hate when people goes over the top over artists. I am not just talking about negative comments but positive comments as well.

When I read the first reason you pointed out I was so going "Yes Yes Yes!!!"
I came to Korea at the end of august and the rumor about the plagiarism issue went on until the end of september. But when I first heard about it I definetly thought the same: "GD is not stupid and YG isn't either."
I think that's the best proof haha
