Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - December Week 1

Wonder Girls is No. 1 again with “Be My Baby” this week. Amazingly the song has increased in score since last week, going from 952 to 965. That is quite an accomplishment this late in the year as many big name artists are trying to make their last sprint to the finish line with their best hit songs of the year. Congratulations to Wonder Girls.

Despite their chart dominance, Wonder Girls is not without competition if they want to stay on top next week.  T-Ara‘s “Cry Cry” moves up four spots to No. 2 next week and looks very likely to be our next No. 1 song, only a metter of when. Both songs are scoring over 900 points and the gap is not too big, so don’t be surprised if “Cry Cry” moves up to the top next week. T-Ara is also enjoying the best year of their career this year as they are in a position to score their second consecutive No. 1 song.

Stubbornly staying at No. 3 this week is Noel‘s “I Miss You“. They are the lone male group, refusing to let another female dominance take the top three.  “I Miss You” has been in the top five for four straight weeks now.  For a non-idol artist this is quite an accomplishment.

Only one new song in the top 10 this week. It is by hip-hop trio Electroboyz. They have scored their first ever top 10 hit with “Ma Boy 2” moving up eight spots to No. 8 this week.  By looking at the song title, K-pop fans should recognize that this song is a sequel of Sistar19‘s “Ma Boy” which was a top three hit earlier this year. Sistar‘s Hyo Rin is featured in “Ma Boy 2”, helping her labelmate to land their first big hit.

THIS WEEK IN 2006:

In this segment, we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi Music Chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.

Trivia question: Name the three most successful songs in our chart history.  If you follow our weekly chart long enough, you should have no trouble naming two of the three songs: Big Bang’s “Lie” which spent a chart record (which I think will stand forever) seven weeks as No. 1, and Wonder Girls’ “Tell Me” which immediate followed “Lie” and was on top for six weeks in 2007.  However, most of you will miss the third song.

A year before “Lie” and “Tell Me” became classics, another song had spent six consecutive week’s on top of our chart (at that time it was the record).  Ballad prince Sung Shi Kyung’s “On The Street” was our No. 1 song from November week 1 to December week 2. The greatness of this song is that it was released on a perfect timing. Back in 2006, male soloists were still a big part of K-Pop and Sung Shi Kyung were among the most popular.  “On The Street” was written by singer-songwriter Yoon Jong Shin. The melody coupled with Sung Shi Kyung’s smooth, tender voice made the song perfect to listen to as Korea was getting into the cold winter season. “On The Street” almost spent a seventh week on top in December week 3 of 2006. It took k-pop’s biggest name, DBSK and their song “Balloons” to overtake “On The Street” by just five points that week.
