Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - September Week 4

Kara strikes again on our chart, winning yet another No. 1 song as “Step” moves up six spots to the top on its second week in the chart. This shouldn’t be a surprise as Kara has been the most successful k-pop artists on our music chart over the last two years. Despite their hiatus and many girl groups have rising in popularity, Kara doesn’t seem to miss a beat and continues to be one of the top girl groups. Congratulations.

Girl groups again swept the top three spots as two former No. 1 songs, Davichi‘s “Don’t Say Goodbye” and Sistar‘s “So Cool” rounds out the top three. When I started compiling this music chart back in 2005 it was all male dominated, that whole year no female artists and groups were able to hit the top. This year, female groups and soloists have occupied the top spot for 27 of the 39 weeks so far. It is a complete reversal that perhaps no one would have imagined a few years ago.

There is only one new song in the top 10 this week. Ballad prince Sung Shi Kyung released his first full album in three years, also the first since his return from military duties. A sneak preview song “Oh My Goddess” was on the chart at No. 15 last week. This week the album’s title song “I Like” hit the chart and debuts at No. 8.  “I Like” showcases Sung Shi Kyung’s voice and unique style. It is a perfect song heading into the winter season.  The MV of this song stars the singer himself and Jo Yeo Jung and is filmed in Hong Kong where Sung Shi Kyung spent a few years of his childhood living there.

Cho PD (feat. In Soon Yi) – 친구여 (Dear Friend)
Genre: Hip-hop
External from soompi image
Album: Cho PD Vol. 5 Part 2 (2004) Track 4
Watch: MV
Comment: Cho PD is a well respected hip-hop artist in Korea. He debuted in 1999 with the album “In Stardom”. Rappers in Korea are either mainstream or underground, but Cho PD seems to be both. While his albums has many hardcore tracks, his title songs are usually mainstream enough to attract the attention of pop listeners.  His biggest hit is definitely “Dear Friend” from part 2 of his fifth album in 2004. This song features the powerful vocal of veteran R&B singer In Soon Yi. “Dear Friend” went on to become a No. 1 song and stay popular for a long time.
