Synopsis

No Yoon-Jae is a 35-year-old lawyer in Canada who was born in Korea but given up for adoption abroad at the age of 3. He is quiet, cautious and kind but his life is turned upside down when he is met by a series of unexpected misfortunes. But through his misfortune he meets and falls in love with Yoo Hee-Ran, who is a 25-year-old top singer who began singing at the age of 17. She is rude and obnoxious and highly ambitious, but weak and vulnerable when it comes to her family.

Kang Sang-Ho is her road-manager, who is simple-minded and ignorant, but innocent and warm-hearted, with a mother who is mentally unstable due to guilt and sorrow she harbors after she abandoned Sang-Ho's older brother when he was just a toddler. With Sang-Ho's mother, miss Bok-Ja (Kim Hae-Sook), as their link, Sang-Ho and Yoon-Jae face each other as potential brothers, but their relationship is challenged when they realize they love the same woman.

Review

The drama starts out with a mild bang, which is somewhat captivating, but it just goes all downhill from there. The biggest problem is the storyline. It is not only formulaic with cliche elements such as birth secret and triangular love, but its overuse of narration and monologues, coupled with major holes in the story development, causes the drama to just fall apart before it even reaches the half-way point.

This had been a high-budget production with location shoot in Canada, and the return of film star, Lee Seong-Jae from his 8-year-hiatus from television, but it inevitably ended as one of the lowest rated drama in terms of viewership, dipping into the 2% mark during many episodes. The acting by Eom Tae-Woong is great, as one would expect after his much talked about accomplishment in 'Rebirth' (KBS) but his character who is supposed to be tough and gangster-like is played out too soft and weak, and Lee Seong-Jae does bring a calming yet alluring presence to the drama but his character is full of holes (like where did he learn to speak perfect Korean when he is supposedly adopted at age 3?).

Above all, Kim Min-Jeong is what I considered the weakest link. Her portrayal of a troubled star is unconvincing and almost annoying (and did they really think people would be interested in watching an obnoxious diva-wanna-be wearing hideous outfits cussing around?). Overall, the drama is boring and tiresome, but it does have one of the sweeter endings I've seen in recent times.
