Weekly Music Chart 2007 – June week 1

2007-06-05 06:20:27 2010-11-24 11:06:45

No. 1 song: Lexy scored her first ever No. 1 song with "하늘위로" (Up to the sky). She edged out Ivy's "이럴거면" (If it is like this) by 15 points. This is the first time since March 2006 (with Lee Soo Young and Lee Hyori) that two female artistes occupied the top 2 spots on our chart. Traditionally, Korea's music chart is male-dominated. But so far this year, female artistes and groups have been doing exceptionally well. Looks like this trend will continue as there are more songs with potential by female artistes/groups looking to move up the chart. As for Lexy, she won the Inky Gayo Mutizen award with her debut song "Young People". In terms of music chart rankings, she came close on each of her songs, but this is her first No. 1.

Biggest Mover of the week: Lee Jae Won's "I'm So Hot" moves up 20 spots to No. 14 this week. With his powerful dance moves, frequent appearances on gayo shows, and decent album sales, this song should move into the top 10 next week.

Hot shot debut: We have a very high debut this week – SG Wannabe (feat. Ok Ju Hyun)'s "한여름날의꿈" (One Summer Dream) debuted at No. 4, replacing their previous No. 1 hit "Arirang". Like "Arirang", this song is an R&B ballad with traditional arrangements at the beginning of the song. You feel like you are listening to a trot song until you hear them singing. Ok Ju Hyun provides a smooth vocal at the first part of the song, and also sang with members of SG Wannabe at the end. This song is already No. 1 on M!Countdown, and looks to challenge the top 3 songs next week.

New songs: This is a very active week, with 14 new songs. The theme this week is the return of many "old-skool" k-pop singers.

Songs to watch out:

6. CSJH The Grace – 한번 더 OK? (One More Time OK?) – The female quartet is moving up the chart very fast. Just last week, they scored their first top 20 hit. Now one week later and 11 spots higher, they scored their first top 10 hit. With increasing album sales and high TV exposure, they may be scoring their first No. 1 hit soon.

24. Wonder Girls – 미안한 마음 ~tears~ (Sorry feeling ~tears~) – This ballad replaced their dance song "Irony". This is the kind of song that you may not like initially, but grows on you as you listen more. Wonder Girls are showing mature vocals in this song, hard to believe they are all 14-17 year olds.

25. Yoon Gun – 설마 (Impossible) – I was wrong! We finally saw Yoon Gun coming out to perform on gayo shows. Not only does he sing, but he also plays the piano on this beautiful ballad. His title song from this album "사랑으로 빚진 날들" (The Days Of Being In Debt Because Of Love) failed to hit the top 10. Let see if this song will, now that people have finally seen him performing live.

29. Yang Pa – 사랑…그게 뭔데 (Love…What Is That?) – 6 years is an extremely long layoff. To return and do better than before and gaining even more fans is amazing. That's what Yang Pa did. I am so glad to see one of my favorite female singers in Korea finally come back with a new album. This song is written by Park Keun Tae and Kang Eun Kyung, same combination for Ivy's "이럴거면" (If it is like this). This song also reminds me of another Park Keun Tae's hit "사랑안해" (I Won't Love) which helped Bae Ji Young revitalize her career last year. Yang Pa also has the top selling album in Korea now. It is almost certain that this song will make a big jump to the top 10 next week.

34. Min Hyo Rin – Stars – Model turned singer Min Hyo Rin already has fans even before debut. This is a nice ballad that should gain public acceptance. She is another female rookie on a very strong class this year.

38. Verbal Jint (feat. Dynamic Duo) – Favorite – If you like commercial R&B with rappings, this is the kind of song that you are looking for. New singer Verbal Jint had the help of established hip-hop group Dynamic Duo on this song. The album is selling pretty well for a new singer who has not yet appeared on any music programs.

44. Hans Band – You Smile, Don't Cry – Like Yang Pa, the 3 sisters who all shared a middle name "Han" returned after a long layoff. They were teenagers when we first knew them back in the late 90s. Now, they are mature young ladies in their 20s. A return of an old-skool k-pop group. Tihe song offers a hopeful message to children who lack love and suffer from alienation. The music video was filmed in Cambodia.

47. Jung Il Young – 여자는 (A Woman) – Most of us should remember Jung Il Young as the singer with a high-pitched voice who sang the theme song "Pray" from the 1st generation hit drama "Autumn Fairy Tale". More than 7 years later, he has returned with a digital single. This is an emotional ballad featuring Jung's distinctly poignant voice. It is about the wayward and misplaced emotions that result from misunderstandings between a couple. The music video conveys, through beautiful images, a painful reunion with a former lover.
