The musical “Hedwig” (known elsewhere as “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) opened its curtains at Seoul KT&G Sangsang Art Hall on May 14 with Kim Dong Wan playing the title role.
“Hedwig” is a rock musical which tells the story of an East German “girlyboy” named Hansel who has a sex change in order to be able to marry a US soldier and leave the country. The sex change gets botched, and Hansel, now named Hedwig, tackles several obstacles after her husband leaves her.
Before his first performance, Kim appeared onstage, resplendent in a platinum blonde wig, sparkly black minidress, and knee-high leather boots. Fishnet tights, glittery eye makeup, and a tiny tiara completed the ensemble. He told reporters, “It’s an honor to star in ‘Hedwig’, and I think it will be remembered as a very meaningful day. I’ll do my best to put on a great performance as I’ve been practicing really hard so far. Please show support and love to Kim Dong Wan’s ‘Hedwig’.”
To prepare for his first role as musical actor, Kim Dong Wan consulted with famous transgender Harisu and asked for advice on transgender Internet forums. His loyal fans have started to call him “Wandwig” in a show of support for his new role.
“Hedwig” also stars Kim Jae Wook, Choi Jae Woong, and Cho Jung Seok. It will run until August 21.
