Epik High (made up of Mithra Jin, Tablo, Tukutz) released a new song “420” shortly after releasing their 10th anniversary video.
On October 23, Epik High released their new song “420” on SoundCloud (link here, WARNING: explicit lyrics), for free. Tablo introduces the song, “Compared to receiving presents from the fans who have been with us for 10 years, we felt it was more Epik High-like to give a gift instead. We gathered all our close hyungs, friends and dongsaengs to make this lightning song.”
The new song was completed at 4:20 AM, thus giving it the title “420.” Top rappers, such as DoubleK, Yankie, Dok2, Sean2Slow, TopBob, MYK, and Dumbfoundead, came together in honor of Epik High’s 10th anniversary. The significance of the song was made greater by the fact that these were artists who had previously featured in Epik High’s songs over the last 10 years
At midnight on October 23, the day of their 10th anniversary, Epik High released a short video on their blog. The video was set in a tranquil café, managing to create a warm feeling with the use of charming props, and it showed the three members absorbed in making their music without restrictions. The background music towards the tail end of the video aroused the curiosity of fans, who presumed that it must be a new song.
Epik High debuted in 2003, and has retained its peculiarly independent color and identity in the past 10 years. They have mixed hip hop with different genres to produce music with a new flavor, and through their poetic and deep lyrics, have managed to spread meaningful messages with their songs. Epik High has also consistently experimented with their music, yet remained close to the mainstream.
In 2011, Tablo moved to YG Entertainment and released a solo album “Fever’s End,” which received a largely positive response, and in 2012, Mithra Jin and Tukutz followed, releasing and promoting their seventh studio album “99.”
