10 Celebrities You Didn’t Know Were from Australia – Happy Australia Day!

January 26 is Australia Day! In celebration of this holiday, let’s review our favorite Korean-Australian celebrities. A few may not exactly be Korean-Australian in the traditional sense of the term, or strictly speaking “from Australia,” but they have definitely tasted both cultures and we are glad to have them in Korean entertainment. Check them out and see how many you know!

Hanbyul, who was the lead singer of LEDApple, hails from Brisbane and studied at Queensland University of Dentistry before deciding to become a singer. His English name is actually Jason.

Actress Jung Ryeo Won is also from Brisbane. She was born in Seoul, but emigrated to Brisbane in 1991. She entered Griffith University as an international business major before being discovered by a talent agent while vacationing in Korea in 1999. She debuted as a member in the girl group Chakra, and later pursued acting full time.

Rapper and leader of C-Clown, Rome, was studying at Sydney University before he decided to go to Korea. He was also discovered by a talent agency on the streets of Seoul.

Kevin of ZE:A was born in Korea, but grew up in Australia. He actually debuted there first under Bedford & Pearce Management, which also managed actor Russell Crowe.

Gong Hyo Jin spent part of her high school years in Australia with her mother and younger brother, while her father remained in Seoul to support them financially. Her family moved back to Korea after the IMF crisis.

Sam Hammington, who recently graduated from “Real Men,” studied Korean while in business school and came to Korea as a transfer student at Korea University in 2002.

Hayana from girl group EvoL is from Sydney’s Canada Bay. Her English name is Kristine Yoon.

Actress Lee Da Hae lived in Sydney and studied there from sixth grade to her last year of high school.

Prince Mak from JJCC was born and raised in Sydney. He studied music at the University of New South Wales, taught hip-hop dancing at a studio in Sydney, and studied acting at the Actors College of Theatre and Television before moving to China and getting his big break in a talent competition that earned him a spot in JJCC.

Once a visiting intern representative for Australia on “Abnormal Summit,” Blair Williams will now be a fixed cast member on the show. You can look forward to seeing him more often.
