A year after the sinking of the Sewol ferry, several Korean celebrities publicly commemorated the dead and joined the families and friends of the deceased in mourning through social network sites.
People all over Korea and the world have been remembering the devastating and needless loss of so many souls while displaying the symbol of a yellow ribbon. It has been a sign of mourning for the dead and longing for the missing since the Sewol ferry sank on April 16, 2014.
Actress Park Shin Hye shared an image on her Instagram of a handwritten quote with a yellow ribbon to mark the first anniversary of the disaster. The text reads, “The children as pretty as flowers, at an age as beautiful as flowers when they bloom, flew away like petals. If you let go of their hands, they are lost. If you don’t keep them in your thoughts, they are forgotten.”
This quote was written by Yoo Jae Suk after the death of Ladies’ Code‘s RiSe and EunB in September, but it also applies to the many young students who were lost last April on their way to Jeju island for a school trip.
Actor Lee Min Ho posted an image of a yellow ribbon with the text “remember 2014.04.16” on his official Facebook page.
Singer Uhm Jung Hwa posted a similar image on her Instagram with the text “I won’t forget. I hope that everything that has not yet been settled will be settled.”
BIGBANG‘s G-Dragon also commemorated the tragedy by uploading a yellow box to his Instagram with an emoticon of a person bowing as its caption.
In addition, actress Honey Lee paid tribute to the lives lost by uploading a photo of herself on a beach on Jeju island with a yellow flower affixed to her chest. “The sea at Jeju is particularly quiet today of all days,” she says. “The canola flower is particularly yellow today of all days.”
These are only a few examples of the many celebrities who used social networking sites on April 16 to commemorate the disaster.
Several television shows also postponed their regular programming in respect for the victims of the tragedy and the bereaved.
