In “King of Mask Singer,” a weekly program in which talented singers wear masks in order to hide their identities, three contestants have been labeled as “men with good-looking voices.” This label refers to singers who are thought to be “good-looking” based on their voices alone, and especially to men who have the power to make women’s hearts beat faster with just their vocal skills.
BTOB’s Yook Sungjae
The first to receive this complimentary label, Yook Sungjae wowed audience and viewers alike with his deep, rich voice that reminded the judges’ panel of Kim Dong Ryul. He received the support of the female judges and went on all the way to the third round. With his powerful vocals, he easily broke the stereotype that good-looking people can’t sing.
From the moment he came onstage, singer Tey impressed the audience with his well-built body. Leaving an even stronger impression with his softly flowing vocals, he quickly turned the tables when his offstage persona turned out be quirky and cute. Kim Gu Ra, famous for speaking harsh truths on television, complimented the singer on his seductive voice.
In the second round, this famous boy group vocalist sang “Stained” by BMK and surprised everyone with his upgraded voice, having hidden his true worth during the duet in the first round. Chen’s amazingly powerful vocals was praised by producer Kim Hyung Suk, who said he had a voice that held a lot of potential for the future” and blew away all prejudice against idol singers. In the third round, he was called “the voice you want to marry” and B1A4’s Sandeul and BEAST’s Dongwoon wanted to recruit him into their own groups. Although this turned out to be impossible, the refreshing high notes climbing upwards in the second half of the song stole the hearts of all the female judges.
In the upcoming episode of “King of Mask Singer” a king will be selected from the semifinalists. The writers stated that someone with a “good-looking voice” will be expected to perform and Ji Sang Ryul declared that the singer charmed him over even though he is a male. To see who the “good-looking voice” is, tune in to “King of Mask Singer” on October 11 at 4:50 p.m. KST.
