On August 7, the film “Train to Busan” officially topped over 10 million theatergoers!
The movie was released on July 20 and has been a box office hit ever since. It is the first Korean movie of 2016 to overcome the 10 million viewers mark. The previous record for highest box office this year was held by “A Violent Prosecutor” (about 9.7 million viewers).
“Train to Busan” had been named as one of the “Big 4” blockbusters of the summer in Korea. The Big 4 also includes “Operation Chromite,” “The Last Princess,” and “Tunnel.” “Train to Busan” was also screened at the 69th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
This is Gong Yoo, Jung Yoo Mi, and Kim Soo Ahn’s first “10 million” movie and boasts the highest viewership score in their entire filmography. It would be the first “10 million” for all the leading actors if you exclude Ma Dong Seok‘s special appearance in “Veteran.”
Gong Yoo had previously stated, “Even imagining reaching 10 million is terrifying. I would be happy with five million. Even five million would be my highest score ever.”
It is also the director Yeon Sang Ho’s first “10 million” movie. He has garnered praise for producing an excellent zombie movie for Korean audiences despite Hollywood having raised the bar so high.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of “Train to Busan!”
