SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo Man was recently announced as one of the winners of the “2016 Asia Game Changer Awards.” The list of winners was released by the Asia Society on September 13 in New York.
The Asia Society was founded by businessman and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller III in 1956 to expand people’s understanding of Asia. This year is the society’s 60th anniversary.
The Asia Game Changer Awards looks at innovative leaders who go beyond Asia and change the world in the fields of politics, economics, culture, art, business, and education. The Asia Society chose Lee Soo Man as one of the pioneers of modern K-pop and praised how he spread Korean culture all over the world.
Other winners from this year included Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, Nepali doctor Sanduk Ruit, and Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra conductor Karim Wasfi. Former winners have been Alibaba founder Jack Ma, Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the UAE’s first female fighter pilot Maryam al-Mansouri, and CEO of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar.
The official ceremony will take place on October 27 at the United Nations in New York, with various famous Asia Society members in attendance.
