The MBC drama “Lookout” showed fans a different side to Kim Young Kwang. The usually bright and smiling actor showed his performance spectrum as he transformed into the complex character of Jang Do Han.
Kim Young Kwang shared, “I really set my affections on my character in this drama and experienced the joy of acting. It had the charm of making me want to keep fighting. Normally I don’t think about a project once it’s finished, but this made me want to do another project soon. It was an energizing drama.”
He continued, “At first I was concerned as to whether I could get into this kind of character. I didn’t even think about the ratings. I was only concerned about getting into character. The director was the one to address the issue of ratings and he did an excellent job. However, I’m not the type to be too concerned about those things. As long as I am doing an honest performance, it should be enough.”
He continued, “Unlike my character, I am actually not that meticulous. Before I started on the drama, I went on the SBS variety show ‘Clench Your Fist and Blow the Boat Horn’ and was really sloppy and incompetent. That’s more consistent with my actual personality!”
“I’m so happy I was able to play the role of Jang Do Han,” he said. “It was a really happy time for me. However, there are some parts that I regret. I don’t think I gave a truly in-depth performance. It’s a role that requires depth, and I regret to say that I don’t think I was able to portray it with enough detail. However, I believe that this drama had a great influence on me and for that I am very glad.”
Jang Do Han dies in the drama, a development that many have noted to be completely out of the blue. Kim Young Kwan also revealed his disappointment about the decision. However, he hasn’t given up hope completely for the next season.
“I hope that Jang Do Han shows up at least in a wheelchair in Season 2. The cast has also expressed that they would like to see that happen. Either way, I’ve really loved this character and it was like a fairy tale getting to be him. If there is a second season, I hope that all the cast makes an appearance. I think that would be really fun. And I hope that I didn’t really die!”
