On the second Wanna One special episode of KBS 2TV’s “Happy Together 3,” Hwang Min Hyun opened up about the hardships of NU’EST and the reason for his tears during the finale of “Produce 101 Season 2.
Recalling the time of NU’EST’s debut, Hwang Min Hyun said, “We debuted in 2012. Back then, I thought you become a superstar when you debut. I thought after our debut, we would become popular, have concerts, and would be able to do what we wanted to do, but we couldn’t so it was very difficult.”
He went on to share a heartbreaking story about one of their fan meetings. “Idol fan meetings are competitive, so we choose attendees by random draw. Our maximum capacity was 100, but only about 50 to 70 people entered. And this was 4 to 5 years after our debut.”
Due to the low success of the group, NU’EST members were unable to voice to their agency, Pledis Entertainment, about wanting to have more activities. “That is why we decided to participate in ‘Produce 101 Season 2,'” shared Hwang Min Hyun.
On the last episode of “Produce 101 Season 2,” many viewers noticed Hwang Min Hyun shedding a lot of tears sitting in his chair as a chosen member of Wanna One. “I thought at least one other NU’EST member would debut with me [in Wanna One]. But I was the only one chosen, and the remaining three members were sitting across from me smiling. I felt so sorry and thought of our hard times together so I started crying,” he revealed.
A lot has changed for NU’EST since participating on “Produce 101 Season 2.” Unlike Hwang Min Hyun’s story about low attendance at their previous fan meeting, 10,000 seats for NU’EST W’s fan meeting were sold out in mere three minutes, with 25,000 people crashing the website for tickets. The remaining three members from “Produce 101 Season 2” and Aron have started promoting as unit NU’EST W with much success on music charts and appearances on variety shows.
