gugudan and NU’EST W impressed with their own takes on classic hits in the first episode of JTBC’s “Sugar Man 2”!
The first episode aired on January 14 and invited singer Lee Ji Yeon and co-ed group Young Turks Club. Lee Ji Yeon was known as an “Icon of Innocence” in the 1980s and 1990s, and the audience described her as the IU or Suzy of her time. She revealed that she is currently running a restaurant in the U.S. with her husband, who had come to the studio to watch his wife perform live for the first time. Young Turks Club was a popular group in the 1990s with multiple hits, and their members shared that they had since gone their separate ways and branched out into other fields.
NU’EST W and gugudan were tasked with taking a song from the discographies of Lee Ji Yeon and Young Turks Club and giving them a 2018 upgrade. gugudan was first up to bat and they took Young Turks Club’s “Affection” and incorporated elements of house music for a great performance. The members of the original group applauded gugudan’s stage and said, “It was sexy and powerful, and it felt new.”
NU’EST W took on Lee Ji Yeon’s “Wind Please Stop Blowing” and changed it to a minor key to give it a more mystical feeling. Lee Ji Yeon was impressed by their take on her song and said, “It was very sophisticated and I loved the groove of their remake.”
