TV Chosun’s “Grand Prince” has proven itself to be a standout historical drama, with its beautiful cinematography, chemistry-filled cast, and exciting plot. Though it is only halfway through its run, the drama has achieved the highest ratings for a TV Chosun drama yet. Here are five things to look forward to in the second half of the drama!
Warning: Spoilers for “Grand Prince” below.
1. The bloody battle between Yoon Shi Yoon and Joo Sang Wook
A key aspect to look for in the second half of the drama is the head-to-head showdown between Yoon Shi Yoon and Joo Sang Wook. So far, Joo Sang Wook’s character Prince Kang has plotted various traps and conspiracies against his own brother, even cutting his own arm and turning Prince Hwi (Yoon Shi Yoon)’s wedding ceremony into a bloodbath. Prince Hwi, on the other hand, has gotten hold of his brother’s weakness, telling him, “I have evidence of you betraying our nation.” Going forward, Hwi will have to avoid being pushed into another corner, avoid his brother’s traps, and cleverly use his brother’s weakness against him.
2. Whether Jin Se Yeon will end up happy with her fated lover
Sung Ja Hyeon (Jin Se Yeon) only recently reunited with her fated lover after a three-year-long wait, where she was unsure if Hwi was dead or alive. Though she dreamed of a happy marriage with the love of her life, her dreams were shattered during her wedding ceremony. Rather than a beautiful wedding ceremony, the celebration was cut short with assassins intruding, people dying, and Prince Hwi being wrongfully accused of high treason. In previous episodes, Sung Ja Hyeon even cross-dressed and threw herself into a river for her love. As she finds herself in more terrible events, viewers will be able to see how she overcomes them in the second half of the drama.
3. A political battle between Yang Mi Kyung and Son Byung Ho
Throughout the first half of the drama, Yang Mi Kyung’s character has supported Yoon Shi Yoon as the Queen Dowager and Son Byung Ho has supported Joo Sang Wook as the grand princes’ uncle. Despite many obstacles, and with Prince Hwi’s miraculous return, Yang Mi Kyung was able to install the former king’s son as the child Crown Prince. On the other hand, Son Byung Ho has accrued wealth, power, and loyal allies as he formed the trap for Hwi. In the coming episodes, the two will battle it out in a fierce political battle, using their political power as well as their influence on the grand princes to take control of the throne.
4. How the side characters will aid the grand princes
In this drama, the supporting characters have shown their devotion and love for the main characters time and time again. Roo Shi Gae (Son Ji Hyun) protected Prince Hwi from the barbarians’ hideout and followed him all the way to Joseon. Despite her friendly and klutzy demeanor, Kkeut Dan (Moon Ji In) is loyal to her lady Sung Ja Hyeon, even helping her cross-dress and sneak away from her parents. Prince Hwi’s bodyguard Park Gi Teuk (Bang Jae Ho) faithfully follows Prince Hwi through thick and thin, and Cho Yo Kyung (Choo Soo Hyun) is Prince Kang’s ally who quietly operates from the shadows. These characters have shown loyalty for their respective main characters, and are also bound to contribute to the great yet difficult times to come.
5. The unpredictability of who will win the world and obtain love
Based on the historical events of Prince Soon Yang and Prince Ahn Pyeong, who fought over one woman, “Grand Prince” has evolved into something more, with different characters aiming to create a dynasty amidst an intense love story. Though the drama has a similar foundation to the historical events, it has spun further, creating an unpredictable quality to the drama.
“Grand Prince” airs every Saturday and Sunday at 10:50 p.m. KST.
