Have you ever tried to write down the lyrics to a song as you hear them?
One of the segments on tvN’s new weekend variety program, “Amazing Saturday,” attempted just that for a mission in their premiere episode on April 7. The segment “Do Re Mi Market” stars Shin Dong Yup, Park Na Rae, Girl’s Day’s Hyeri, Moon Se Yoon, SHINee’s Key, Kim Dong Hyun, and Hanhae.
The mission turned out to be harder than they’d thought, even with several idols in the cast. The first song was BTS’s DNA, which everyone knew the melody to, but had trouble with the words in the rap parts. SHINee’s Key at one point inserted a nonsense word and joked, “All [K-pop] songs have to have meaningless phrases at some point. Like ‘Ring Ding Dong’ doesn’t have a meaning.” Eventually Hanhae got the lyrics right and won three plates of grilled eel.
Next was Bolbbalgan4’s “Fight Day,” which Hyeri felt confident in. However, the cast failed their first attempt and got one of the servings of seafood (their prize) taken away. In the end they used up all their hints and failed to get the lyrics right for this round.
In the third round, the prize was steak-on-rice and the song was SEVENTEEN’s “Very Nice,” which got the cast lit from the opening bars. However, the lyrics turned out to be a challenge. When one of the cast members, as a joke, guessed that the lyrics contained the name of a branded soft drink, everyone in the cast had trouble un-hearing that reference when they listened to the song again.
In the end the cast also failed this round and Key said, “I see why people say [idols’] songs are difficult. It’s hard to listen to them without any context.”
