Hong Suk Chun Speaks Honestly About Difficulties Of Running His Own Business + Voices Support For Young Workers

TV personality and restaurateur Hong Suk Chun recently talked about the economic difficulties that many self-employed people face in Korea.

On May 8, a press conference was held for the entertainer’s new TBS program entitled “Hong Suk Chun’s Oh! My Road.”

“Hong Suk Chun’s Oh! My Road” is a program in which Hong Suk Chun and DJ Julian, a resident of Itaewon for over 10 years, try to tackle the negative effects of gentrification on Itaewon’s Gyeongnidan Road. Hong Suk Chun is known for owning several restaurants in Itaewon.

During the event, Hong Suk Chun was asked if he encountered any difficulties while filming the show. He answered, “I felt lonely because I had so many ideas but I didn’t know who to talk to, but now that I have colleagues, I’m glad. It was hard to communicate with government institutions. It’s an assignment that annoys me the most.”

He continued, “I’m sure there’s a solution. Self-employed people across the country come find me after sending texts like, ‘It’s hard. I want to die.’ To be honest, it’s really hard for me too. There was a time when I used to employ up to 200 people.”

Hong Suk Chun stated, “I didn’t want to fall behind in paying their monthly salaries, so I’d give them all of the money I’d make from appearing on broadcasts.” With tears in his eyes, he stated, “But that was hard too, so I had to close down a few stores. I’m not sure where those friends are now.”

He added, “There are many people like me across the country. So I think about how I can help the self-employed people, as well as the younger friends who dream of running their own businesses. It can’t be solved if the adults don’t take the lead. It’s wrong if those with power don’t help out. We have to solve the overall bigger problem.”
