Today is Dragon Boat Festival! Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival (端午节 in Chinese), is a public holiday in China that is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which falls on June 7 this year. It is being held to commemorate Qu Yuan (343-278 BC), a patriotic poet who died by suicide by jumping into a river when his beloved state was conquered. It is said that, back then, people paddled out on boats and threw rice into the river in order to keep ghosts and fish away from his body. This is why dragon boat races are now the main attraction of the festival and people eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) on this special day.
