Kangnam And Lee Sang Hwa Visit Her Parents After Honeymoon + Bond As A New Family

Kangnam visited his in-laws for the first time after his marriage to Lee Sang Hwa on SBS’s “Same Bed Different Dreams 2 – You Are My Destiny.”

On the November 11 episode, Lee Sang Hwa’s mother cooked up a feast including handmade dumplings, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), braised short ribs, and mung bean pancakes. She said, “I’m eagerly awaiting our kids’ [arrival]. I can’t believe our daughter got married. I’ll send her off with trust in Kangnam.”

The newlyweds arrived at the home of Lee Sang Hwa’s parents dressed in their hanbok (Korean traditional clothing). They bowed in front of Lee Sang Hwa’s parents and listened as they spoke words of blessings, following Korean tradition. In the studio, Kangnam commented, “It didn’t feel real [that I was married], but it felt real after bowing.”

Lee Sang Hwa and Kangnam then lovingly bickered over their pet names for each other. Kangnam wanted Lee Sang Hwa to refer to him as “Yeobo (an affectionate term for a married partner),” but she felt embarrassed and called him “Jagi (honey)” instead. Putting their differences aside, they enjoyed the meal with her parents.

Kangnam reacted with delight after tasting the food and won over his mother-in-law with his reactions. With a smile, she said, “This is what I cook for.” Kangnam revealed, “I gained 15 kilograms (approximately 33 pounds) in one month because of my mother-in-law’s food. I ate three bowls of rice.”

Lee Sang Hwa’s father thought back to his first meeting with Kangnam. “He first came to say hello and asked, ‘Should I get naturalized?’ Our relatives were worried after articles were published [about the relationship]. But after watching you trying to get naturalized, I thought, ‘He’s really becoming our son-in-law.'” During his interview, Kangnam explained, “They didn’t necessarily oppose, but there was some difficulty because of my nationality. I was going to get naturalized anyway, but I got it done faster after meeting Sang Hwa since she’s a Korean national athlete.” He added that he’s completed the application and is waiting to take the exam.

His father-in-law then chose grammar as a concern for Kangnam’s citizenship exam. Making everyone laugh, Kangnam said, “I thought that the word for father-in-law was ‘my adult’ because I thought he is my adult.” When he confused the writing for “chicken” and “dirt,” which have two final consonants, he said, “I think I need to hurry up and learn now since I’ll have to teach my child.”

Lee Sang Hwa’s parents also spoke about the sacrifices that led up to her first gold medal. They said that Lee Sang Hwa’s older brother began ice skating first, but they could only sign her up for classes due to their financial circumstances. Her mother continued, “Since she had to go do off-season training in Canada every year, it cost 10 million won (approximately $8,580) a month. I couldn’t stop working, but I didn’t feel tired because I was proud of her.” Her father added, “Sang Hwa saved up her monthly training expenses and bought me a car during her first year of high school.”
