Song Ji Hyo's New Film

Song Ji Hyo’s new movie “Intruder” is off to a promising start at the Korean box office!

On June 5, the Korean Film Council officially announced that “Intruder,” which premiered the day before, had drawn a total of 49,578 moviegoers to theaters on the first day of its release. (As of 8:29 a.m. KST on June 5, the total number of moviegoers recorded by “Intruder” was 50,411.)

Although the number would be modest by normal standards, the figure marks the highest number of first-day moviegoers achieved by any film since the COVID-19 outbreak began disrupting daily life in South Korea. The last film to surpass 40,000 moviegoers at the Korean box office on its first day was “Beasts Clawing at Straws,” released 107 days prior on February 19—and widely considered the last film to be released in Korea before the COVID-19 outbreak effectively shut down the movie theater industry.

As “Intruder” gears up for an international release in 26 countries all over the world, industry watchers are hoping that its promising first-day results mark the beginning of the revival of the Korean box office.

“Intruder” is a mystery thriller starring Song Ji Hyo as Yoo Jin, a woman who went missing 25 years ago. When she returns to her family decades later, her older brother Seo Jin (played by Kim Moo Yeol)—who was traumatized by her disappearance years ago—starts to grow suspicious of his sister. Although the film was originally scheduled for a release in March, its premiere was postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
