As tvN’s “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” winds to a close, chief producer (CP) So Jae Hyun sat down to talk about the drama and its upcoming finale.

“It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” is a unique romance drama about the love story between Moon Kang Tae, a community health worker at a psychiatric ward who doesn’t have time for love (played by Kim Soo Hyun), and Go Moon Young, a successful children’s book author who suffers from antisocial personality disorder and has never known love (played by Seo Ye Ji).

With just one episode left in its run, So Jae Hyun expressed disbelief that the drama was already coming to an end. “It seems like just yesterday that we were filming in the chilly days of early spring, and now we’re already approaching the end of the drama in the middle of summer,” he remarked. “I want to thank all the amazing actors who helped ‘It’s Okay to Not Be Okay’ shine.”

From the outset, “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” received a great deal of attention due to the fact that it marked Kim Soo Hyun’s very first drama since his return from the military last year. Although So Jae Hyun praised all of the cast members for their stellar acting and contributions to the drama, he spoke highly of Kim Soo Hyun’s performance in particular.

Describing his importance to the drama as a whole, the CP commented,  “Kim Soo Hyun is an actor who became the sturdy central axis of our drama over the course of 16 episodes.” He also sang the praises of leading lady Seo Ye Ji, remarking, “She’s an actress who perfected Go Moon Young, who was a new kind of character that hadn’t been seen in romantic comedies before.”

So Jae Hyun continued, “I was able to feel the cast’s fondness for the drama and their passion from seeing the twinkle in their eyes on set: Oh Jung Se, who took on a difficult acting challenge and exceeded our expectations; Park Gyu Young, who was constantly praised by the crew; and everyone who played the staff at the publishing company and the psychiatric hospital.” Playing off the drama’s title, he added, “I think we were able to create a truly ‘okay’ drama because of our unparalleled cast.”

“I myself received a lot of healing and comfort from [the drama], and I think I will remember it as a good memory for a long time,” he went on. “Thank you so much to everyone; you all worked really hard.”

Finally, So Jae Hyun hinted at what viewers could look forward to in the drama’s highly-anticipated series finale.

“Up until now, we’ve shown you the process of Kang Tae, Moon Young, and Sang Tae embracing and healing each other’s emotional wounds,” said the CP. “In the final episode, you can look forward to seeing what lies ahead for these three people after they achieve emotional growth.”

He warmly added, “I hope that watching these characters inspires viewers to think of themselves as precious and to take the time to worry about their own happiness.”

The final episode of “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” will air on August 9 at 9 p.m. KST.
