Kang Ha Neul Talks About His Upcoming Movie, Why He Deleted His Social Media, And More

In a recent interview with Ilgan Sports, Kang Ha Neul talked about his win at the Baeksang Arts Awards, his upcoming movie, and more.

When the interviewer congratulated Kang Ha Neul for the award, he said, “It’s still surreal. I thought that one of the senior actors would receive the award, and I wasn’t thinking about winning at all. I was just there to happily congratulate the winner. Personality-wise, I don’t really like unexpected events. I don’t think they fit well with me. Kang Ha Neul and a Baeksang award? It doesn’t feel real.” Gesturing to the trophy next to him, he said, “It’s weird having this trophy here, and it feels like a prank.”

Talking about “When the Camellia Blooms” also taking home the grand prize of the night, Kang Ha Neul said, “I was so happy. But I’m also a little embarrassed about it. An award is something that goes to only one, but that day, I really thought about this a lot: we worked hard, but the other teams must have worked just as hard. Many people have said that they don’t like the concept of giving an award to two winners, but I really like it. If it were up to me, I think I would’ve given an award to everyone.

Kang Ha Neul also talked about his travel variety show co-stars Ahn Jae Hong and Ong Seong Wu. When asked if it their first meeting wasn’t awkward, he said, “I met Ahn Jae Hong during the movie ‘Twenty,’ and we also met once during a gathering. [The show] was really my first time meeting Ong Seong Wu, and he’s got such a great personality. It’s like it’s second nature for him to be considerate of others. Thanks to that, it was really comfortable, and the three of us had a lot of fun traveling.”

Ong Seong Wu also sat next to Kang Ha Neul during the Baeksang Art Awards, and he commented, “It was such a relief that Seong Wu was next to me. We were all sitting far apart because of social distancing, so it felt like you were just off by yourself, and because you had to be still, that made it even more awkward. But Seong Wu was next to me, so we could talk and joke around, and it was nice.”

Kang Ha Neul is currently shooting a film called “The Pirates 2: The Goblin Flag” (literal title), the sequel to the 2014 film “The Pirates.” Asked for a spoiler, the actor replied, “It’s a spectacular movie, and it’s of a quality that’s rare in Korean movies.” Laughing, Kang Ha Neul added that he was wearing a baseball cap during the interview not because he hasn’t showered, but because he’s had to grow his hair for the movie, and he didn’t know what to do with it. He continued, “I have to film tomorrow, so I couldn’t even trim my facial hair. We’re filming all over the country, and we don’t know yet when it’s going to premiere yet, but please look forward to it.”

After the movie, Kang Ha Neul said he wants to take a break. He said, “After being discharged from the military, I did ‘When the Camellia Blooms’ right away, then I did ‘Traveller,’ I did theater, and I shot the movie ‘Rain and Your Story.’ As soon as that ended, I started ‘The Pirates 2.’ So now, I think I want to rest a little bit. I never thought this before, but after being in the military, I started thinking about it a lot: if I do projects back to back, sure, I’ll get something out of that, but in doing so, the time I have to reflect on myself dwindles.”

His current goal as an actor is to have fun while acting for the rest of his life. “I want to have fun during crying scenes, and even if it’s a scene where I need to be angry, I want to be having fun on set. I really respect director Lee Joon Ik. He said to me while making the film ‘Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet,’ ‘Don’t put everything on the line for movies. Put everything on the line for the people that you’re making the movie with.’ These days, I’ve been thinking about what he said. I’m doing my best to live that way.”

Explaining why he deleted his social media, Kang Ha Neul said, “There’s no particular reason why. I’m just not good at posting photos and managing an account. And because I had an account, I got various requests from different places and situations that I’d have to capture and post, and I didn’t like that. I didn’t like using it as a tool for something else. One day, I found myself, half-asleep, just writing random things on Facebook. It had become a habit. So I got rid of it first thing. And after making an Instagram, I increasingly felt that it wasn’t for me, so I deleted my account.”

Talking about dating, Kang Ha Neul said, “I think it’s right to say that I haven’t yet met someone that’s a good fit for me. I am going to date eventually. When you meet someone healthy, your energy changes. And I want to have conversations [with that person] about different things. But I’m such a homebody that it’s not easy to find someone. Of course, you can make an effort for somebody, but right now, my plate is full even with my projects. When I’m taking a break, I’ll put my tendencies aside and make an effort for my future someone. But not yet. I think I’ll have to be resting to find the time to do that.”
