SEVENTEEN's Hip Hop Unit Talks About Their Roles, Group Dynamics, Fun Facts, And More

SEVENTEEN’s hip hop unit looks charismatic modeling for W Korea magazine!

In the interview with S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon that followed the photo shoot, the hip hop unit members talked about the release of SEVENTEEN’s latest album “; [Semicolon].”

SEVENTEEN’s previous album “Heng:garæ” surpassed 1.06 million stock pre-orders and eventually earned the group the title of “million sellers” with its impressive first-week sales. Wonwoo commented, “Rather than the number of album sales, it’s foremost for us to deliver our message to more people. Of course, more people have to listen to our music for our message to reach more people.” He also explained that working on the album felt like a small break to all of the members. Mingyu added, “That’s the message of our album, but it doesn’t mean we’ll rest while making the album.”

When asked what kind of articles the members wanted to see published after the release of the album, S.Coups picked, “Live like SEVENTEEN,” and Vernon suggested, “Are we living like SEVENTEEN?” as article titles.

Mingyu explained that the scene in the music video where the members make a toast with their beer glasses was filmed with the members sitting at different heights, causing the members sitting in lower positions to be soaked with beer. S.Coups elaborated, “I was one of those people soaked with beer. I changed to a different outfit, but I still smelled of beer all over. I didn’t even drink a sip!”

On SEVENTEEN’s close relationship with one another, Vernon revealed that the members took turns being noisy. He said, “A member who’s not feeling well might be down and think, ‘Ah, they’re too noisy,’ but the next day, that member is the noisiest. That’s why we can’t bring ourselves to say, ‘You’re too loud,’ to one another easily.” Mingyu added that since the members had seen each other for nearly 10 years, it was barely any different from how long he’s known his family.

The members also talked about the difficulties of having 13 members, sharing that they can’t all ride one elevator at once and that the waiting rooms were still too crowded for them. S.Coups mentioned that Jeonghan always found a comfortable spot to lie down on, and Vernon added, “It’s all or nothing. If you’re next to Jeonghan, you get a comfortable place or you get your place stolen.”

S.Coups also shared that their dorm was surprisingly quiet compared to the past. However, the members revealed that coming to an agreement on what to eat was still difficult.

Mingyu explained the reason SEVENTEEN was able to stay as a team was because the members communicated well despite their busy schedule. Wonwoo chose the harsh discipline during their training period, and S.Coups explained that Dino worked hard to create a pleasant atmosphere as the youngest member.

Wonwoo shared, “I’ve changed positively thanks to the members. It’s not that my movements are slow, it’s that tend to not use any unnecessary energy. There’s beauty in being slow too. Since I only spend a little bit of energy, I have better stamina than the other members.”

S.Coups also talked about his position as leader. He shared, “I tend to get dragged along. Amidst that, I think I just have to not forget that I’m a leader. After all, I’m also just one person among the SEVENTEEN members.” As an advantage to being the leader, S.Coups revealed that it was easy to introduce himself because he didn’t need any other words to describe himself. Vernon added, “That’s the part I’m most envious about.”

The members also shared miscellaneous information about themselves. S.Coups commented, “Vernon has gotten better at acting cute.” He asked, “Where in the world did you learn to act cute?” Vernon replied, “I learned through comics. S.Coups is into golf these days. He practices his golf swing anytime and anywhere.”

Mingyu revealed that Wonwoo recently got a tan, and Wonwoo revealed that Mingyu gains muscles more easily when exercising compared to other people. Vernon added that himself, Mingyu, and Woozi were the best at the bench press, deadlift, and squat with all of them lifting around 300 kilograms (approximately 661 pounds). He added, “Woozi is definitely strong. His posture is stable, and he lifts five to 10 kilograms (approximately 11 to 22 pounds) more.”

Finally, S.Coups revealed that he wished for SEVENTEEN to be a group that continues to promote for a long time. He shared, “No matter what decisions [the members] make, I’ll respect it since it’s their decision, but I want to continue with them, and I’ll lead in a way to make that happen.”
