Bong Joon Ho, Bang Si Hyuk, Lee Soo Man, And More Named On "Variety500" List Of Most Influential Business Leaders In Media Industry
Many Koreans were selected for the fourth annual edition of Variety500!
Variety500 is a list of the 500 most influential business leaders shaping the global media industry. These leaders are picked by the Variety editorial board based on contributions and accomplishments over the past 12 months.
Among those named in this year’s list include Director Bong Joon Ho, Oh Seok Geun of the Korean Film Council, Big Hit Entertainment founder and CEO Bang Si Hyuk, SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo Man, and CJ Entertainment vice-chairman Lee Mi Kyung (Miky Lee).
This is Bong Joon Ho’s second consecutive selection on the list. Regarding the director, Variety commented, “After winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, director Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Parasite’ became the first foreign-language film to win best picture in the near 100-year history of the Academy Awards.”
Miky Lee produced Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and is a primary promoter of KCON to introduce K-pop in areas like New York and Los Angeles.
For former director and current Korean Film Council chairman Oh Seok Geun, this is his third time on the list. Variety applauded the council’s establishment of an online ticket-booking system for independent theaters as well as the launch of Indie Ground, an initiative to support distribution and networking for independent filmmakers.
Bang Si Hyuk is a new addition to the list with Variety noting his accomplishments with BTS and work towards diversification with the acquisitions of Pledis and Source Music.
Lee Soo Man is the first Korean to be named to the Variety500 for all four years. Variety commented on his early work launching highly successful boy group H.O.T. in 1996 and his ability to stay consistently influential with his latest work with SuperM.
