“Vincenzo” is one of the most anticipated projects of the first half of 2021, scheduled to premiere on February 20. Song Joong Ki stars as an Italian lawyer and Mafia consigliere who returns to South Korea due to conflicts within his organization. He teams up with Jeon Yeo Bin, 2PM’s Taecyeon, and Yoo Jae Myung to go against a cast of villains that includes Jo Han Chul, Kim Yeo Jin, and Kwak Dong Yeon. It is being directed by Kim Hee Won (“The Crowned Clown,” “Money Flower“) and written by Park Jae Bum (“The Fiery Priest,” “Good Manager,” “Good Doctor,” “God’s Quiz“).
Premiering on March 3 is “Mouse,” starring Lee Seung Gi as an upright but innocent young police officer and Lee Hee Joon as a lawless detective who lives for his revenge against the serial killer who murdered his parents as a child. The two of them go on the track of a predator who is in the top 1 percent of psychopaths. This will be Lee Seung Gi’s first drama in two years, and the actor described it “as an incredible challenge [for him] as an actor.”
There are also dramas scheduled to air in the first half of 2021 without specific premiere dates.
This includes the second season of the popular drama “Hospital Playlist,” starring Jo Jung Suk, Yoo Yeon Seok, Jung Kyung Ho, Kim Dae Myung, and Jeon Mi Do as five longtime friends who work at a hospital together. All five actors are scheduled to return for the second season.
Another drama is “Navillera,” starring Park In Hwan, Song Kang, Na Moon Hee, and Hong Seung Hee, and based on the webtoon of the same name. “Navillera” is about a man named Duk Chool who starts to learn ballet at the age of 70, and a ballerino named Chae Rok who finds himself losing direction in the face of his dream at age 23.
Also based on a popular webtoon is “Frightening Cohabitation,” a fantasy romantic comedy about a male gumiho who is 999 years old and a female college student who was born in 1999. It stars Jang Ki Yong, Girl’s Day’s Hyeri, Kang Han Na, Kim Do Wan, and Bae In Hyuk.
“Doom at Your Service” stars Park Bo Young, Seo In Guk, Lee Soo Hyuk, Kang Tae Oh, and Shin Do Hyun. It is a fantasy romance about a man known as “doom” who causes everything he touches to vanish and a woman who puts her life on the line to avoid her fate. It is being written by Im Me Ah Ri (“Beauty Inside“) and directed by Kwon Young Il (“My Unfamiliar Family“).
Lee Bo Young and Kim Seo Hyung are set to lead “Mine,” a drama about tough women who set out to escape the world’s judgment and find their true selves. It is being written by Baek Mi Kyung (“The Lady in Dignity,” “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon“) and directed by Lee Na Jung (“Love Alarm,” “Fight For My Way“). It also stars VIXX’s N.
There are also several highly anticipated projects scheduled for the second half of 2021.
This includes “You Are My Spring,” which stars Seo Hyun Jin, Kim Dong Wook, Yoon Park, and Nam Gyu Ri. Described as a “healing romance” drama, it will be about the stories of people who live in a building where a murder case previously took place and who go about their adult lives with their seven-year-old selves in their hearts. It is being written by Lee Mi Na, who wrote the drama “Bubblegum” and also the “Goblin” OST “I Will Go to You Like the First Snow,” and directed by Jung Ji Hyun (“The King: Eternal Monarch,” “Search: WWW“).
Ji Sung will make his return to dramas in “Devil Judge,” which also stars Kim Min Jung, GOT7’s Jinyoung, and Park Gyu Young. It puts a unique spin on legal dramas by turning the courtroom into a live show in order to share a new message about justice. It is being written by Moon Yoo Suk, a former judge who wrote “Miss Hammurabi,” and directed by Choi Jung Kyu (“Children of Nobody“).
Many people are looking forward to “Mount Jiri,” which is being written by star screenwriter Kim Eun Hee (Netflix’s “Kingdom” series, “Signal“). It also stars Joo Ji Hoon and Jun Ji Hyun, and will be Jun Ji Hyun’s first drama since 2016’s “The Legend of the Blue Sea” (apart from a brief appearance in “Kingdom”).
Kim Je Hyun, the director of CJ ENM’s IP (intellectual property) Department, stated, “Just as we led the K-drama boom last year, tvN plans to build an exciting lineup that will meet the expectations of drama fans both in Korea and worldwide. Our target ranges from clear genre productions to blockbusters that will appeal to the general public, as well as new challenges in content and format. We will spread out our broadcast schedule over the week in order to satisfy the various expectations of the viewers.”
