DSP Media Responds To Police Dismissing Defamation Case Against Acquaintance Of Former APRIL Member Hyunjoo

DSP Media has announced their intention to appeal the police’s decision to dismiss the defamation case against the acquaintance of former APRIL member Hyunjoo.

In February, someone who identified himself as Hyunjoo’s brother wrote a post alleging that Hyunjoo had been bullied by the other APRIL members. Another person claiming to be Hyunjoo’s former classmate made similar allegations. DSP Media denied all the allegations of bullying and took legal action against Hyunjoo, her family members, and her acquaintances.

In April, Hyunjoo shared a personal statement about the issue, which DSP Media responded to. APRIL members Chaewon and Yena have also spoken out against the allegations. Hyunjoo has also taken legal action against a former DSP Media employee for defamation.

On May 19, the Seoul Gwanak Police Station dismissed the charges of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Use, Information Protection, etc. (i.e. defamation) that had been filed against “A,” Hyunjoo’s high school acquaintance.

On June 8, DSP Media issued a response that said, “The case was dismissed because according to the accused, they had gotten the information from Lee Hyunjoo and other articles published around the same time about the case, so it could not be proved that the accused had written the post with an awareness that it was false. Nothing in the police’s decision proves that what the accused had written was true.”

DSP continued, “In order to ensure that people take clear responsibility for spreading false information, we have filed a lawsuit against the person who has been identified as the provider of the relevant information. Investigation on that case will continue. We are also in the middle of appealing the decision to dismiss the case against ‘A.'”
