MONSTA X's Hyungwon Opens Up About How They Handle Disagreements + Learning To Express Himself

In a recent interview and pictorial for Marie Claire magazine, MONSTA X’s Hyungwon talked about what he’s learned over the past six years of his career.

MONSTA X recently made a comeback with their new mini album “One of a Kind,” and Hyungwon reflected on his experience writing two of the tracks on the album. In addition to co-composing the music and lyrics for “Secrets,” Hyungwon penned the lyrics for their fan song “BEBE” entirely by himself.

Describing the emotions that went into the heartfelt song, Hyungwon remarked, “It’s impossible to capture all the emotions that I felt while promoting for six years, but out of those feelings, I gathered the words that I most wanted to say [to our fans], and I wrote the song while hoping that my sincerity would reach their hearts.”

He added, “Both ‘Secrets’ and ‘BEBE’ are music genres and stories that I’ve wanted to tackle for a long time now, so while I was working on them, I felt like [those urges] were being relieved, which was great.”

Hyungwon also revealed that he now feels more in touch with his own identity than ever before in his career.

“I think that before, I didn’t know how to express myself,” explained Hyungwon. “Especially right after our debut, I was very timid. There are people who, even when they like something, don’t know how to say how they feel. I was like that.”

“But as I met lots of new people, I became comfortable with expressing myself and sharing my honest feelings,” he went on. “Now, I talk about myself a lot, and I’m also good at expressing it when I like something.”

Finally, Hyungwon talked about how MONSTA X handles differences of opinion within the group.

“We all try to be considerate of one another without crossing any lines,” he shared. “In other words, we respect each other. That’s why, even when our opinions differ on something, we don’t try to change each other’s minds. First, we’ll listen to what the other person has to say, and after understanding their thoughts or points, we try to narrow the gap between our opinions.”

However, he went on to add, “One thing we never disagree on is that we have to make the choices that are best for the group.”
