Recent K-Dramas With K-Pop Idol Actors For You To Check Out
Are you a fan of both K-pop and K-dramas? Then what could be better than the merging of both worlds — K-pop idols in K-dramas. It’s very common for K-pop groups to have at least a few members venture into acting, and with the continuing popularity of web dramas, this has become even more commonplace.
We’ve gotten quite a lot of idol-led web dramas recently, as well as more established idol actors in big, buzzy shows. So whether you’re a fan of Red Velvet or T-ara, SF9 or GOT7, there are plenty of choices for you!
“Replay”
“Replay” is a light, breezy web drama that is centered around a band of high school students. High school life can be an awkward and uncertain time in many people’s lives, and this is how it is for these characters too. Though there’s nothing groundbreaking about this web drama, it’s short and fun enough for a quick afternoon binge. This is (G)I-DLE’s Miyeon’s drama debut too, and for her first project (and lead role), she does pretty well. Another idol you can watch out for is SF9’s Hwiyoung, who plays fellow classmate and band member.

“Imitation”
Based on the popular webtoon, “Imitation” is a drama about the K-pop world, and it tackles some of the issues that are widely associated with this competitive industry. And who better to play idols than idols themselves? The cast is chock-full of both more established idol actors as well as rookie idol actors, so if you’re a fan of groups such as SF9, ATEEZ, T-ara, U-KISS, etc., then this one will be right up your alley. Lee Ma Ha (Jung Ji So) finds herself given a second chance to debut as an idol and tries to get her group as much recognition as possible. While at events, she meets Kwon Ryoc (U-KISS’s Lee Jun Young), one of the most well-known members of the successful boy group, SHAX.
While it’s expected that the acting for most of these rookie actors is a little on the “greener” side, the great songs from all the different groups in the show make up for it.

“The Devil Judge”
“The Devil Judge” is a slick drama about a broken legal system that’s set in a dystopian universe. In this alternate reality, the courtroom trials are aired live in a variety TV show manner, in an attempt for the public to have greater faith in the judicial system. The chief judge is Kang Yo Han (Ji Sung), a judge who embodies swagger and charisma and is even a little on the chaotic side. By his side is Kim Ga On (GOT7’s Jinyoung), a fellow judge who can’t help but have misgivings about his colleague and often questions his real intentions.
No one can argue about the fact that Ji Sung is a powerhouse actor (and he’s unequivocally superb here as well), and he always has the ability to draw out that much more from his scene partners. And while we’ve seen Jinyoung do well leading his own dramas before, this one is arguably one of his most layered performances.

“Doom at Your Service”
In this fantasy drama, Seo In Guk plays Myul Mang, a god who brings forth doom and destruction wherever he goes, and is frankly tired of it. One day, he meets Tak Dong Kyung (Park Bo Young), a similarly weary soul who finds out she’s dying, cheated upon, and in trouble at work… all in one day. It’s quite the interesting watch, and there’s just so much pretty around. And the pretty includes SF9’s own lead vocalist, Dawon, playing Dong Kyung’s immature younger brother who slowly learns to take care of those around him.

“Blue Birthday”
“Blue Birthday” is Red Velvet’s Yeri’s first leading role, and she, coupled with PENTAGON’s Hongseok, tells a fantasy story about a burgeoning first love. On her 28th birthday, Oh Ha Rin (Yeri) discovers a letter and old photographs that were left to her by her first love, who died in an alleged suicide 10 years ago. Discovering that the photographs mysteriously take her back in time, she uses this newfound ability to go back in time and understand her friend better— and hopefully save him from the same fate.

“Police University”
This is B1A4’s Jinyoung’s first drama after being discharged from the military. He plays Kang Sun Ho, a genius high school hacker, who then enrolls in a police academy after he graduates. Joining him is Oh Kang Hee (f(x)’s Krystal), a girl he had a crush on the moment he saw her compete in a judo tournament. And then we have Cha Tae Hyun‘s Yoo Dong Man, a detective-turned-professor at said academy, who also happens to be aware of Kang Sun Ho’s checkered past. The three of them eventually team up to tackle the rampant corruption that’s happening within the walls of the school.

“Yumi’s Cells”
The soon-to-air “Yumi’s Cells” is certainly going to be interesting to say the least. First of all, it’s based on the hit webtoon that focuses a lot on the character’s various “cells” that are more or less responsible for the person’s behavior. Second of all, the drama is staying very true to its source, so we’ll be seeing all those cutely-animated cells running around the screen.
After a difficult breakup, the otherwise ordinary Yumi’s (Kim Go Eun) “love cell” falls into a coma-like state and is no longer in commission. That is until she meets the emotionally stunted Goo Woong (Ahn Bo Hyun), whose own “love cell” sparks hers awake. Competing for her affection (and ours) are SHINee’s Minho and GOT7’s Jinyoung (his second appearance on this list!), who both play her co-workers.
