Park Bo Young Reveals Why She Keeps Her Diary In A Safe, Funny Way She Gauges Reactions To Her Films, And More

Park Bo Young talked about her career, her family, and much more on “You Quiz on the Block”!

On the April 27 broadcast of tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block,” Park Bo Young appeared as a guest for the program’s “Your Diary” special.

Park Bo Young, who is an avid diary writer, explained that she initially began keeping a journal because she wanted to be good at interviews. The actress elaborated, “When I do interviews after a project has finished, they’re done right after filming for dramas, but they’re done later for films because of post-production and I can’t remember any anecdotes [by then]. When reporters ask me for new anecdotes and I rack my brain to say a few, the reporters say, ‘I saw that in an article.’ After that, I started writing down what has happened.”

She jokingly continued, “That’s how it started, but overtime, it basically became a hit list. There were a lot of interrogative questions for self-reflection.”

Park Bo Young also revealed that she kept her precious diary in a safe, explaining, “Since I’m writing in it everyday, there are a lot of good things, but I also write about sad and angry things, so I thought something disastrous could happen [if it was released]. If a thief were to come in my house and this was released, I figured I could be in big trouble so I put it in a safe.”

She added, “That’s why I told my really close friend that if I was in some kind of accident, ‘You have to go to my house and get the diary in the safe first, no matter what.'” Due to her concern about the diary being found, host Yoo Jae Suk asked, “Isn’t it better to burn them?” Park Bo Young replied, “I’ve been keeping them [in the safe] since 2014 but I burned all the ones before that.”

Park Bo Young explained, “If my mom were to see it, she could get upset, and I’ve recorded all the hardships I endured while working.” Yoo Jae Suk asked, “Since you said you burned it, does it also contain swear words?” Park Bo Young made everyone laugh as she responded, “It does.” She added as a joke, “Before I die, I will burn my diaries and confirm they’ve turned to ashes, and then die.”

Finally, Park Bo Young unveiled the diaries she’s been keeping since 2014 for the very first time. In her diaries, Park Bo Young recorded memorable moments like her visit to Gummy’s concert, the birth of her first nephew, and more.

Yoo Jae Suk mentioned that Park Bo Young’s brother-in-law is known to be a big fan of her, to the point where he took home a life-sized standee of the actress on his way home. Park Bo Young explained, “In the winter, there was a standee of me outside a store. I was a soju model back then. My brother-in-law was drunk and said, ‘My sister-in-law is cold. I have to take her somewhere warm.’ I’m sure the store manager thought he was a bad customer, but they still told him to take it. He said he lay me down on my side in the taxi and took me home.”

Park Bo Young hilariously continued, “My sister left me on the balcony. After my brother-in-law washed up and came out, he said, ‘Why did you put her on the balcony when I brought her because it was cold? Leave it in the room.’ I went to their house and I was there in their room.”

The actress spoke more in-depth about her close relationship with her two sisters, sharing, “I believe that I personally received a lot from my older sister in the past, so I have a debt of gratitude where I want to do something for her.”

Park Bo Young commented, “My hometown is Chungcheong Province. I had to come [to Seoul] alone but because my parents were worried, they asked [my sister], ‘Can’t you go and stay with her?’ My older sister didn’t have friends in Seoul but she came with me. Since I was so busy, she cooked and cleaned for me, did my laundry, and sacrificed a lot.”

She continued, “There was a time my younger sister was really sick so my older sister stopped everything she was doing in Seoul and went home to nurse her. Honestly, I wasn’t able to thank her much. I don’t know if it’s because we’re siblings, but it’s hard to sit her down and say, ‘Unnie, thank you.'”

Park Bo Young added tearfully, “That’s why when my nephew was born, I wrote her a letter for the first time and gifted my older sister a car. So that she can drive a safe car with her baby’s car seat. I think I properly expressed my feelings then. Through my letter. I can’t say it [out loud] because I’m embarrassed.”

“I figure that [my sisters] are the strength that allow me to endure,” she shared. “As I was organizing my diaries, I found a letter my younger sister wrote me. She wrote, ‘No matter what anyone says, to me, you are the best actress.’ While reading that yesterday, I bawled.”

Later, Park Bo Young shared the hilarious tendency she has to discover the audience’s true reaction to her films. She said, “We hold test screenings before [film] releases, but since we invite people we know, they all say that it’s fun. I wanted to feel the real response, so I went in among regular moviegoers.”

She continued, “What I definitely learned was that the washroom is where the most sharp criticism comes out. Once, I was washing my hands when one moviegoer said about my acting, ‘Isn’t she kind of lame?'” Park Bo Young had everyone laughing as she confessed, “I kept washing my hands while thinking, ‘Was I that bad? Did I not do well?'”

While her appearance has not yet been confirmed, Park Bo Young was reported in early February to star in the upcoming drama adaption of “Morning Comes to Psychiatric Wards Too” (literal translation), which will be helmed by Lee Jae Gyu, the director of hit zombie series “All of Us Are Dead.”

tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” airs every Wednesday at 8:40 p.m. KST.
