Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - August Week 3
Last week we had predicted a tight three-way battle for the top spot this week: reigning two-week champion miss A‘s “Goodbye Baby” is still going strong; 2NE1‘s “Ugly” has been topping many charts and winning in music shows; while Super Junior‘s much anticipated return to K-pop with “Mr. Simple” is definitely generating a lot of fanfare.
Each of the top three songs have been leading different charts, and the newest song won the battle as Super Junior’s “Mr. Simple” had the most consistent scores.
While “Mr. Simple” debuted at No. 9 last week, it has now jumped many spots to the top. This win is definitely very sweet for Super Junior, whose last album Bonamana did not generate a No. 1 song on our chart despite topping many TV rankings. Congratulations to Super Junior.
Miss A’s “Goodbye Baby” is still going very strong, especially on airplay charts. It has fallen one spot to No. 2 this week after spending the last two weeks on top.
Most people predicted 2NE1’s “Ugly” to go on top this week but instead it stays at No. 3. The major disadvantage to “Ugly” is on TV Apperance. 2NE1 did not appear on KBS Music Bank and M!Countdown last week while Super Junior and Miss A appeared on all four music shows. Turns out that was the difference maker in a tight battle. Even though our chart only awards 10% to appearances, unfortunately it becomes a determining factor this week.
Outside of the big battle between the top three songs, there is only one new entry in the top 10 and it is a brand new song. Sistar‘s “So Cool” enters the chart at No. 9 this week. This song is the title track from Sistar’s first full length album. It is an exciting club pop dance number composed by the Brave Brothers. The strong beats and the refreshing club beats are what make this song charming. “So Cool” may join the battle for No. 1 next week as well.

THIS WEEK IN 2006:
In this segment we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi music chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and was later expanded to 50 songs.
Turtles is a three member originally with leader Turtleman, female rapper Z-E, and female lead singer Subin. They debuted in 2001 with their first album “Go! Boogie!”. Subin left the group after the first album to pursue a solo career and Gumpi replaced her as lead singer. In the early days, Turtles’ music is more hip-hop oriented as the group has one singer and two rappers. Later, both Turtleman and Z-E are involved more in singing and their music style has become more pop and the theme is always cheerful. Turtleman tragically passed away in 2008 due to a heart attack. Turtles went onto a hiatus until earlier this year when they came back with a new male member Lee Kang.
“Aeroplanes” is from Turtles’ 4th album. It was one of their biggest hits and one of the top k-pop songs in 2006. It spent six weeks (non-consecutive) on top of our chart starting this week exactly five years ago. This is a great song to listen to in summer.
Let’s review this song’s MV here.
