4 Reasons To Watch "The Facetale: Cinderia," A K-Beauty Gold Mine
“The Facetale: Cinderia,” starring Lee Joo Yeon and Kang So Yeon, is a web series about makeup. I was hesitant to try it at first. Not another Cinderella story. And what could possibly be interesting about makeup? You just wear it!
I clicked on the show by accident, and the effect it had on me was completely unexpected. For one thing, it had me hooked through the end. Second, it sent me on a crazy research spree of Korean makeup. Let me explain in sequence.
If makeup tutorials and K-dramas got married and had a baby, it would be Cinderia.
Each episode is only around six minutes, and there are 10 episodes, so you can finish the whole series in an hour or so. Don’t expect it to be profoundly moving or enlighten the deepest caverns of humanity. It’s not that kind of show. But it does deal with a central conflict I’m sure many girls have experienced: the love-hate relationship with makeup.
I know I’m certainly one of those girls. How many times have you heard guys say this: “You’re like a completely different person without makeup!”
While you secretly pray you’re not one of these girls, you wonder which date is the date you can finally come out bare-faced without fearing your significant other is going to turn and run in the other direction. It took me many years (and countless dates) to feel at ease with myself with or without makeup, especially when in the presence of men. “The Facetale: Cinderia” resolves this internal agony in 60 minutes, relieving the immense pressure we sometimes place upon the “miraculous” new identity that comes with makeup.
And most of all, it will inspire you to experiment with your style.
The best part about Cinderella storylines are the makeovers. Dramas usually make you wait a dozen episodes before the big reveal, but “The Facetale: Cinderia” offers eight makeovers in an hour. How ridiculously awesome. The female lead is gorgeous, and her makeovers made me want to try something new from head to toe. Hair. Makeup. Mid-rise jeans.
Who knew tucking the blouse into your jeans could look this good?
Watching “The Facetale: Cinderia” gave me such a jones to learn about Korean cosmetics.
After a few days of research, I was fairly certain Koreans are the masters of “barely-there” makeup. They pay attention to the minutiae of beauty that you didn’t even realize mattered, like applying foundation in a certain direction so the fur on your face lays flat. When it comes to eyebrows, we all know K-beauty is famous for their age-defying flat brows. But few know that in order to achieve this natural look, they use a pencil with a slanted flat tip (similar to the tip of a highlighter), and draw in each hair.
As I shared my latest discoveries about Korean makeup — courtesy of Cinderia — with friends at dim sum, they had this “AHA” look on their faces, immediately wanting to know more. Basically, if you want to take your makeup knowledge to the next level, “The Facetale: Cinderia” is for you.
After watching the many tutorials in “The Facetale: Cinderia” such as “Glitter Metal Makeup,” “Red Hot Glam Makeup,” “Elegant Makeup,” and “Plastic Surgery Makeup Without Going Under the Knife,” I realized there’s nothing basic about base makeup.
My research led me to Jung Saem Mool, one of the most respected K-beauty experts who boasts an impressive client list of Korean stars such as Song Hye Kyo, Kim Tae Hee, Lee Hyori, BoA, and miss A. Her contouring makeup tutorial is phenomenal. It’s no surprise that most recently, Kim Tae Hee invited Jung Saem Mool to do her wedding makeup.
Armed with a ton of newfound knowledge, I was eager to put it to the test. I went out looking for something similar to the pink highlighter Jung Saem Mool used to cover dark circles. Under the expert tutelage of a Sephora employee, I found a helpful alternative, which — poof — makes dark circles disappear without a trace. I never knew you had to “color correct” dark circles before applying concealer for them to truly disappear.
No other show has inspired me to go on such a learning spree about beauty. And I’m glad for it. “The Facetale: Cinderia” opens a door to the secrets of Korean makeup, and now I have a few new tricks up my sleeve, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
