Actresses Enjoy Success As Bestselling Authors

Actress Choi Kang-hee (My Sweet Seoul) published her essay collection at the end of September, and within only ten days it’s already become a bestseller.

The collection is titled Choi Kang-hee, A Little Child’s Little Happiness and has shot to the top ten of various bestseller lists. Currently, the volume has sold more than 32,000 copies and is heading into a fifth printing. The publisher’s initial printing produced 10,000 copies, but because of demand, they have upped the latest print order to 20,000 volumes.

The CEO of the publishing company, Yoon Dong-hee, said, “Approximately 80 percent of readers who bought the book in its first week of publication are twenty- and thirtysomething women. It seems that Choi Kang-hee’s sincerity has connected with that young generation which feels instability and loneliness keenly.”

Speaking of bestselling author-actresses, Lee Hye-young (Queen of Housewives) is set to follow her popular first book with a second. The actress, oft-noted for her sense of fashion and style, had published a book called Beauty Bible, and is now putting out The Fashion Bible. Like her first volume, this follow-up is a collection of her own idea and tips on cultivating style.

Beauty Bible had sold more than 20,000 copies and became a bestseller. Based on the popularity of that volume, after news was released of her second, already preorders have come in for The Fashion Bible in numbers exceeding 50,000.

Lee Hye-young will be at a special event to speak about her experience writing the second book at Seoul’s Imperial Hotel on October 14.

Until I read it, I think this is just part of the idol phenomena... which is also just part of celebrities doing their best to sell stuff regardless of their actual abilities. Notice how I said they're not dumb... anyone can write a book... but the gripe is with the rating. Just because she has a huge success... does that mean the writing itself is actually 'good'? Or is it just popular? Kind of like the Twilight fandom... it is not what you call the Shakespeare of modern times, let alone a readable story. But clearly it has 'fandom' outside of the PROPER literary critics. Same thing with idol-related work. Yeah, they're probably smart and all, but how much of that is reflected in the sales or the ratings?

I admire this other side of Choi Kang Hee. Definitely she's a great actress, so natural and warm. Another thing she's fashionable and I like her style too. But some critics, based on some of her media appearances, has labeled her as quite an "eccentric." Now with this insightful and precious collections of essays, she has proven her true self, and her sincerity. Her views and stories are a source of inspiration and joy to many. I wish her more success!!

& besides, I've heard that there are NO DUMB Korean celebrities! Unlike America [although I may be wrong, but I doubt atm], Korean celebs must come from a really good college!

i hate how people think entertainers are unintelligent. just because they're talented doesn't mean they're dumb. some people can have high IQs and have a passion for the arts (music, drama, visual arts). people think that arts don't have educated people, but that's not true...
