Jang Nara’s 'Sky And Ocean' Flops Big At Box Office

Ouch. Jang Nara’s latest film, Sky and Ocean [하늘과 바다], hasn’t just flopped at the box office, it put in a decidedly miserable showing in last place in its opening week. It seems these days we’re hearing about new films breaking records by bringing in millions of viewers in a single weekend (examples: Take Off, Haeundae, Chaw), but Sky and Ocean fell short of even 10,000 audience members in its first weekend. To be specific, it drew 9,952 viewers.

Shown on 224 screens, that means each theater only drew 44 to 45 people; that amounts to 4.51% of the market share of overall theater attendance. Counting the rest of the week (it premiered on October 28), the total ticket sales add up to 13,715 for a total revenue of 90.5 million won (approximately $72,000). In contrast, the big winner was Jang Dong-gun’s Good Morning, President in its second week in first place; it commanded 57.9% of the market share and drew on average 245,000 viewers per day.

Korean Movie "하늘과 바다 (HaNeulGwa BaDa. 2009)" Trailer

That’s too bad, because I don’t really think the film was promoted that strongly. There had been a brief splash of news months ago as the film began shooting, and a small number of Jang Nara interviews in the week leading up to the premiere, but that’s all I saw. Then again, the movie may seem cute, but in an almost generic sort of way:

In the film, Jang Nara plays a genius violinist named “Haneul” (or Sky), while singer-actress Juni plays “Bada” (or Ocean). (I’d originally translated the title “Sky and Sea,” but it appears the production has used the word “Ocean” instead; too bad, since I was drawn to the alliterative reading of “Sky and Sea,” which seems to roll off the tongue more readily.) Yoo Ah-in (Yoo! Ah! In!) rounds out the trio of unlikely friends in the music-themed coming-of-age story.

The film was produced by Jang’s father Joo Ho-sung, himself a theater and film actor. Mixed with some praise for Jang’s performance were accusations of favoritism leveled at Joo, although those criticisms have since faded.

it is an interesting comment on how good both the film was and Jang Nara acting that she won best actress in a foreign film at the Chinese film awards, that is to go with the nominations for the Korean film awards last year in best film and actress. Also it was the only Asian film to go to a Europe film festival and got more awards and also talks about a full release in Europe. So I think that kind of points to whatever the reason it failed in Korea had nothing to do with the film or the acting.....

Jang Nara seems to have an odd status in Korea these days. While a lot say she not popular she still brings a lot of attention to herself when she goes to korea and certainly her face and name are known to most and her old pop songs are classics. it more simply you can not stay away for five year and still expect to be a so called A list star. In korean it all what you did now, not yesterday, sadly.
She lost either 7kg or 9kg depending on what report you believe but she was like 38kg I think it was, it was for the role of a sick young girl in her film, though she back to around 41 kg she says she likes the look and plans to stay with it.
And getting nominations for the film awards before it was shown it theatres had nothing to do with anything. The awards are not fan or viewer based it was done by the award committee on performance not reputation or money made. And it was shown at a film festival anyway.
As for strong heart..lol it was a joke, 80% of that show is joking 10% true and 10% bluff. She was not allowed to directly to put in a plug for Sky and Sea so she used that story to be able to mention it, after all why do you think people go on those games shows but for promotion?
She back in china riding out the troubles strong heart made for her be putting up fake subtitles to sensationalise what she was saying and chinese netziens where calling for her blood the next day. She making a costume drama in china and this year is her ten year celebrations since she official depute. She was a model before that in her teens.

There a story behind all this. First off the nominations for the awards where not for how many ticket the film sold, it was for as based on the award committee option on the best films shown in the time period, witch Sky and Sea was, and it had been shown at a film festival before its main release, so it meet all the required criteria to be nominated. It was attacked by fans of a certain well known film actress who missed out while the small Sky and Sea got through, this lead to her fans attacking the film and Jang Nara. The actress in question put out a statement saying she was happy with the awards and the way it decided on the dominations and was sad that her fan had attacked another actress in such a manner. It was then attacked again by those who have a long term issue with the way the awards have been run, and they used Sky and Sea in their attack even going to the degree of saying the Sky and Sea had bribed its way into the dominations. All this was reported in a negative manner by the korean press witch led to the theatres showing the film didn't even bother putting out promotional posters to let people know it was screening and to make it worse, only showed it early in the morning and late at night, not at the prime time slot. So it really had no chance, it was totally killed by press coverage that always took a negative slant to the film. In the end in protest the Jangs pulled the film out of Korean theatres altogether, though you be hard put to find that in any Korean press stories, witch in many ways only proved the Jangs correct.
I really do not know why the Korean press chose to always write negative stories, maybe because it was a small film so an easy target, or some kind a nationalist thing because Jang Nara is china based.
lastly is was to be finish months before it was but the films main sponsor had to pull out and the film ran out of money, so the Jangs had to put their own money into it to finish it.

i think the big flop was in some part due to the negativity concerning the films award nomination, wasn't there an interview with Jang Nara and she kinda said the same thing?

I'm not totally against her but for this film to receive 4 nominations before it even airs makes bad publicity.

aww.. even after one of her fans donated a bunch of money for the production to go on!
Looks like a cute movie. Honestly, i agree to the thought that it might not have been promoted much.
Maybe they should've casted a popular actor/actress alongside her. :/
Seems like her era has gone.
