15 Korean Phrases And Slang Words Every K-Drama Fan Should Know

Koreans come up with slang words and abbreviations so often that it’s almost impossible to keep up. But, if you’re an avid K-drama watcher, you’re probably well in the loop and can pretty much carry conversations using only slang words! Just in case you need to refresh your memory, here are just 15 Korean slang words and phrases that you have most likely heard while watching K-dramas.

1. Heol

Heol / 헐: “I can’t believe it”

Often used when you’re in a slight state of shock or awe.

2. Dae-bak

Dae-bak / 대박: Awesome, Jackpot

3. Aigoo

Aigoo / 아이구: Geez, oh no, oops

Can be used in many different contexts, but usually it’s used to show frustration.

4. Jjang-ee-ya

Jjang-ee-ya / 짱이야: … is the best, number 1

5. Ah-ssa!

Ah-ssa! / 아싸!: “Yes!” or “Oh Yeah!”

6. Ddo-ra-yi

Ddo-ra-yi / 또라이: Crazy, lunatic

7. Jin-jja?

Jin-jja? / 진짜?: Really?

Usually said when in a state of surprise or shock. Can be used as a question or statement.

8. Omo / Omona

Omo / Omona / 어머 / 어머나: “Oh no!” or “Oh my gosh!”

9. Mi-cheos-suh?

Mi-cheos-suh?! / 미쳤어?!: “Are you crazy?!”

10. Eo-tteok-hae?!

Eo-tteok-hae?! /어떡해?!: “What do I/we do?!”

This word also means, “how?” when spelled as 어떻게.

11. Sseom

Sseom / 썸: Flirting

It’s usually used when someone says or does something and you’re seriously cringing.

15. Call

call / 콜: “Let’s do it!” or “I’m in!” or “Sure!”
