Hello Venus's Nara Talks About Making A Fresh Start With Acting In

Hello Venus’s Nara recently made a splash in the SBS drama “Suspicious Partner” (directed by Park Seon Ho and written by Kwon Ki Young). In an interview, the idol-turned-actor talked candidly about the challenges of adding acting to her repertoire after debuting as a singer.

“There were a lot of scenes that I felt I could have done better, especially in the beginning,” she said of “Suspicious Partner.” “I was too nervous at the beginning and my shoulders were obviously way too stiff. My shoulders loosened up a little towards the end but I think I still have a lot to learn.”

She added, “It’s not easy to act while getting rid of nervousness and trying to relax. I’m still trying to do that but I don’t have a lot of ease. I’m grateful that people are looking favorably on my efforts. I’m still lacking in a lot of ways but a lot of people have told me that it’s nice to see my improvement from the beginning. I should have shown more of what I could do in the beginning… but thanks to people understanding that I’m working to improve, I want to show an even better side of myself in the next project.”

Nara debuted in 2012 with Hello Venus, but had always wanted to be an actress. Due to her parents’ objections, she focused on her studies and entered university. Not wanting to give up on her dream, she became connected to Fantagio, an agency known for managing actors (Hello Venus was originally a joint venture between Pledis and Fantagio and is now exclusively managed by Fantagio) and learned how to sing and dance as well as act.

She said, “Prejudice [against idol actors]? It was there. But I think of it like this. On stage I’m part of a girl group but we’re not just singing and dancing. We’re putting on a performance. Acting is the same thing. I’m acting up on stage. Since I’ve learned how to express myself on stage, I thought I could express myself through acting as well.”

“I have a lot of things I want to challenge in life,” she shared. “I have ambitions as a singer, as an actor, as a variety star, as a CF model. It’s hard to decide where to focus but I want to be a well-rounded person.”

She added, “I thought about this a lot but to be honest Hello Venus is a group that has a lot of hiatuses. We put out an album and then won’t be active for 6-12 months. We do stuff on our own during the group’s hiatuses but I always think of myself as Hello Venus’s Nara. I want to do well so I don’t bring down the Hello Venus name. When I work on my own, I feel a greater sense of responsibility.”
