SF9's Hwiyoung Talks About Being Judged For Being An Idol Rapper On

SF9’s Hwiyoung has been praised again on “High School Rapper 2.”

On the March 2 episode of Mnet’s “High School Rapper 2,” the contestants concluded the cipher mission among their same-year groups, and formed teams for the next mission.

Hwiyoung was a part of Kim Ha On’s team, and shared, “For [SF9’s] first title track, I only performed half a line of rap. Then I heard that I was bad, so I felt angry and ashamed.” The other contestants and the mentors were surprised at how little the idol had been given to perform. He continued, “I was ignored and was asked to not rap a lot, but I thought that in order to change this perception, I should rap with responsibility. A lot of people think that because I’m an idol, I would be extravagant, so I put into [my rap] that it doesn’t really have to be that way.”

On Hwiyoung’s honest lyrics, mentor Hangzoo commented, “I was really surprised by the way you pulled out the first four lines in the intro. I think rather than other people having prejudice, it seems like those who are in charge of rapping among idol groups have their own bias. You don’t have to think that way.”

GroovyRoom’s Kyu Jung praised Hwiyoung by saying, “You came out to prove yourself, and I think you’ve done that. I think you can go around saying that you’re not an idol rapper, but a rapper.”

Mnet’s “High School Rapper 2” airs every Friday at 11 p.m. KST.
