Red Velvet Shares Thoughts After First Performance In North Korea

On March 31, South Korean singers and performers flew to North Korea for a special concert in Pyongyang that is set to last until April 3.

For the April 1 concert that took place at the East Pyongyang Grand Theater, Jo Yong Pil and Lee Sun Hee, Choi Jin Hee, Yoon Do Hyun, Baek Ji Young, Jung In, Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun, Ali, Red Velvet, Kang San Ae, Kim Kwang Min, and Yoon Sang showcased performances. Red Velvet’s Joy was unable to perform with the group due to scheduling conflicts.

Red Velvet performed “Red Flavor” and “Bad Boy” without any changes being made aside from those necessary to account for Joy’s absence. During their performance, the audience could be reportedly seen clapping their hands above their heads to the beat of the music.

When asked about how they felt, Yeri stated, “They clapped a lot louder for us than I thought they would, and sang along as well. I felt a lot less nervous because of that.”

Wendy explained, “We had the mindset that even if there was no reaction, we would do our best since we were doing this to showcase our songs, but the audience displayed a lot of positive responses.” Irene added, “When we were out of breath, the audience smiled and clapped for us.”

Kim Jong Un was also reported to have changed his schedule in order to watch the South Korean performance that took place on April 1. Regarding this, he is said to have stated, “There was a lot of interest in whether I would come to watch Red Velvet. Originally, I planned to come the day after tomorrow [for the concert on April 3], but I adjusted my schedule and came today.”

Kim Jong Un also reportedly met with the performers afterwards and asked them to express to President Moon Jae In, “As we said, ‘Spring is coming,’ this time, let us continue with this momentum so that we may be able to say, ‘Autumn is here,’ in the fall.”
