Kim So Hyun Talks About "Radio Romance" Being Her First Drama As An Adult
Kim So Hyun opened up about “Radio Romance” being her first production after turning into an adult and the low ratings it received.
In “Radio Romance,” Kim So Hyun had played Song Geu Rim, a radio show scriptwriter, and partnered up with Highlight’s Yoon Doojoon to create a sweet and youthful love story.
Kim So Hyun said, “‘Radio Romance’ was my first drama after turning 20 years old (in Korean reckoning). Of course, there were many disappointments and it was tiring as well, but I gained many friendships with good people, and it was a happy film set, so I will remember it for a long time.”
When asked why she chose this drama as her first drama after becoming an adult, Kim So Hyun answered, “I had to portray a 20-year-old, so I was very concerned about which direction I should proceed. I didn’t know the right answer, and I had no idea what to do. Then I saw the script for ‘Radio Romance’, and it was really easy to read. I thought that it would be nice if I could be in a light and bright production as my first drama after turning 20 years old. That’s how I came to star in this drama. Also, the subject of radio was refreshing, and I thought it would be a warm drama, so I looked forward to it.”
She continued, “I worried a lot. Truthfully, I didn’t think there would be a good reaction from the beginning. I started off with the thought that I should just accept it, but I think more people enjoyed it and loved it than I thought they would, so I’m grateful. This is a drama I’m very affectionate about, so I made lot of effort to not give up until the end. It was nice that the actors and I were able to team up to start the drama brightly and end it nicely.”
The actress admitted she tried to lose the pressure about this drama being her first production after becoming an adult. She stated, “I didn’t feel any pressure, but there had to be a story for the viewers to understand in order for Soo Ho [Yoon Doo Joon] and Geu Rim’s expression of affection in the latter part of the drama to not feel awkward, so I tried not to miss that. I tried to relax because it will show if I feel pressured and there would be unnecessary tension.”
“Radio Romance” recorded low viewership ratings of 2 percent. She admitted honestly that she was disappointed about that. Kim So Hyun commented, “If I was the only one who worked, I wouldn’t mind whether the viewership ratings were poor or not, but the production crew worked hard behind the scenes. The shooting scenes were very difficult, and the the production crew was very tired. It would’ve been great if I could’ve paid them back with high viewership ratings, so it’s regrettable.”
Then she added, “However, the staff didn’t show their disappointment, so the atmosphere didn’t get bad. The great atmosphere was maintained, and it was great at the end. The viewership ratings were poor, but I gained a lot from this drama.”
