Girls' Generation's Seohyun Opens Up About Her Experience Performing In North Korea

Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun recently spoke of her experience traveling to North Korea for a set of special concerts.

Seohyun not only performed during the April 1 concert that took place at the East Pyongyang Grand Theater and the April 3 concert at the Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Gymnasium, but she was also the MC for both performances. She was joined by other singers including Cho Yong Pil, Lee Sun Hee, Yoon Do Hyun, Baek Ji Young, Jung In, Ali, and Red Velvet.

She began by stating, “I was very honored to be called an icon of cultural exchange between North Korea and South Korea. I would be more than happy to be a part of future peaceful exchanges between the two if I’m given the opportunity. I think all of the performers hoped that these concerts can become a stepping stone to better relations between North Korea and South Korea. I felt that the North Korean performers felt the same way as well.”

During the concerts, Seohyun performed “Blue Willow Tree,” a song by North Korean singer Kim Kwang Sook. When asked about the response she received, Seohyun stated, “I had a cold and my throat was sore, so I was very sorry and sad that I wasn’t at my best condition on stage. However, the people in the audience showered me with warm applause and cheers, and that gave me the strength to finish my performance. I was touched by their support.”

She also spoke of her reunion with Hyon Song Wol, a North Korean singer Seohyun performed with over a month ago in South Korea during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Seohyun said, “She was very worried about my health throughout the performance, and she shared many warm words with me. After the concert, she thanked me for my performance and for being a good MC.”

Finally, Seohyun concluded by stating, “It was a great honor to be a part of a team with such great singers and watch them perform. I feel like I have learned so much through this trip.”
