Baek Ji Young Talks About Performing In North Korea

Baek Ji Young was one of 160 South Korean artists who recently performed in North Korea.

South Korean singers and performers held special concerts in Pyongyang from March 31 to April 3. The star-studded line-up included Cho Yong Pil, Lee Sun Hee, Yoon Do Hyun, Jung In, Ali, Red Velvet, and GIrls’ Generation’s Seohyun.

Baek Ji Young said, “I couldn’t believe it even when I was singing in Pyongyang. I heard that they especially like my song ‘Like Being Shot by a Bullet.’ It meant a lot to be together and it was a profound moment.”

The singer performed at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre on April 1 and at the Pyongyang Arena on April 3.

Her ballad “Like Being Shot by a Bullet” was reported to be popular amongst young North Korean men for its lyrical melody and sad lyrics.

After watching her perform on April 1, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly showed interest in the singer’s performance. Art director and head of South Korea’s Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Do Jong Hwan, said, “Since Baek Ji Young sang passionately, [Kim Jong Un] asked if it was a new song and what kind of singer she was. He was very interested in South Korean songs and singers.”

Baek Ji Young said, “The thing I remember the most is the facial expressions of the audience members who were enjoying the performance. I think we were able to have a successful performance because North and South Korea worked together. Every moment was moving. I sincerely hope that more diverse forms of cultural exchange can happen.”
