Former President Park Geun Hye Receives Sentence Of 24 Years In Prison

Former South Korean president Park Geun Hye has now received a prison sentence of 24 years, following her impeachment.

Park Geun Hye was embroiled in a corruption scandal in 2016 that led to a public outcry, after which she was officially removed from office and arrested in March of 2017.

During her first trial that was televised live on April 6, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Park Geun Hye to 24 years in prison and a fine of 18 billion won (approximately $16.9 million).

The court found Park Geun Hye guilty of 16 of 18 charges made against her, including colluding with her longtime friend Choi Soon Sil to demand large conglomerates Samsung and Lotte to give money to Choi Soon Sil’s non-profit foundations, as well as forcing other corporations to sign deals with companies related to Choi Soon Sil. Additional charges she was convicted for included the leaking of confidential presidential documents to Choi Soon Sil, creating a blacklist of people in the cultural and entertainment industries, and more.

The court noted that Park Geun Hye has denied the charges made against her and does not appear to be reflecting on her actions, and instead has passed the blame to others. Park Geun Hye did not attend the trial.

The former president’s prison sentence is four years longer than that of Choi Soon Sil, who was sentenced with 20 years in prison.

Park Geun Hye’s lawyer has stated that he will be speaking to Park Geun Hye about filing an appeal, and will announce the decision later on.
