Olympic Gold Medalist Lee Seung Hoon Under Suspicion For Assaulting Younger Speed Skating Athletes

Speed skating athlete Lee Seung Hoon, who participated in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, has gained attention for the recent suspicion of assaulting his younger colleagues.

On May 23, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism released their findings on a particular inspection on the Korea Amateur Skating Union. They stated, “We have confirmed the circumstances that ‘A,’ who is a member of the national speed skating team, has assaulted and cruelly treated two younger athletes in lodging and cafeteria areas while participating in overseas competitions (in 2011, 2013, and 2016).”

They continued, “Concerning the truth of the assault, A stated that they were disciplining the juniors, but the victims are regarding it as assault. The claims of both parties run contrary to each other.”

Speed skater Lee Seung Hoon has become known as the athlete “A,” who was mentioned in the Ministry’s statement. Sources in the ice sports industry stated, “A few athletes must have reported it when the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism was running their recent inspection. Lee Seung Hoon explains that he was only joking around with his younger colleagues and lightly hit them in the process.” A source from Lee Seung Hoon’s side stated, “We are currently verifying the facts.”

Speed skater Lee Seung Hoon was able to achieve a gold medal in men’s mass start, and a silver in men’s team pursuit with his teammates Chung Jae Won and Kim Min Seok in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
